Getting Started In Texas.

I am new here and am so happy I found this site! I am sure this topic has been covered countless time but I couldn't find a post specific to Texas. I have found a licensed kitchen to rent but have no idea where to go from here. Do I specifically need a license? What about liability insurance? I just want to make sure I'm on the up and up. Thank you!

I just recently started subleasing from someone as well. I'm getting just general liablity insurance right now to just cover myself since I do not have my own shop yet. I also registered w/ the county I live in (just in case) as well as the state of tx (which is not cheap). From there, I'm going to get my food handlers license. You also will need to register for your Tax ID number w/ the IRS.
depends if you want to be legit and file taxes correctly. For that you will need to register w/ the state of tx and get your ID number.
Where in TX are you? I am in Round Rock/ Austin .... and have been thinking very seriously of starting out too. I would love any information that you have if you are over by me.
I would want to be 100% legit! I guess I need someone to take me by the hand and show me exactly what I need to do. thanks for the responses so far guys.

1.. Go down to your county courthouse and register a DBA
2. Go to the comptrollers office with your DBA and get a sales tax ID#. While you are here you will decide if you will be a sole proprietor or LLC. If you are a sole proprietor you will file your taxes with your personal income taxes and if you are a LLC you will file seperately. The decision is yours.
3. contact an insurance company to find out about the liability insurance
4. contact your local/county health department which is prolly who governs you if not they will direct you to the city or state by the address you give them. The HD will be able to tell you exactly what you need from them. I assume a food handler's permit and that is all but I could be wrong. In my county, Harris County, the kitchen is licensed...not the person. But you can't be in the kitchen by yourself without a food manager so you take the food handlers class and your all set.
***no need to worry about a federal ID # unless you will have employees or be a corporation.
****edited to add**** you need to contact your city/county tax offices to find out what kind of property tax you are responsible for...I had to pay taxes on everything in my building as of Jan 1st. It really sucked.
