Hi! I am thrilled that I will start taking the Wilton Fondant Class on Monday! On the supply list, it says to get the 20 inch rolling pin-- do I really need to get that now? I have my mom's wood rolling pin that does not have any handles. Will that be good? ANy comments, advice or suggestions will be appreciated about this class!
I have taken course 1 and 2, but have been dying to take this class!! I am taking it at Michaels for 1/2 off. I took the other classes at Hobby Lobby (also half off). I was going to take the fondant class at Joann (much closer than Michaels), but they were only offering 25% off and you had to buy the book as well-- it was not included in the fee.

Thanks for letting me babble-- can you tell i am excited!!?? Have a great day!

I would stick with the rolling pin you have, you can always decide later to invest in a larger rolling pin.

Thank you! I will eventually buy the large rolling pin-- when I have a 50% off coupon. I would like to get the spiral impression pin -- but also with a coupon.
I am thinking of going ahead and get the polling mat-- or should I wait for that too?
Thanks again for your advice!

I just went to the local hardware store and bought myself a large piece of pvc pipe, cleaned it up really good and VIOLA! a long large sturdy rolling pin for about 2.50 cents. Can't beat that! Plus as a bonus, I can store my non stick tupperware mats in it! LOL......

freddyfl....i did the same thing.......PVC pipe is the best...you can get it as long as you want it.....and it stores all of my mats!!!! that was one of the best tips i got from my Wilton Teacher!!!! so when you are done with your class you will be more ready to make an educated descion on what kind of roller you want and need....and you will find that that PVC pipe may be just the trick you need.....plus it will save you so much more than 50%!!!!! good luck and have a great class!!!!!

I would wait for a coupon, but I would invest in it... It is easier to use. JMO

I really like the 20in rolling pin. I bought it because I didn't have one already. If you have trouble with thicknesses they now have the spacer rings for the larger rolling pin.

It will also double as a weapon if needed. icon_wink.gif

Any rolling pin will work though.

I love the rolling mat. It comes with sqaure and round markings on it, and it is rolled up in the box and not folded up they way they do the dividing wheel. It will also roll nicely around the 20in rolling pin.

A hint for it, when rolling it up, roll the markings on the outside and it will lay flat for you when you go to use it. If you roll the markings on the inside it will curl up on you when you use it.

Good grief. I just finished all my classes and this never even occurred to me! dunce.gif I've been taping the corners down with the blue painters tape to keep the darn thing from rolling. icon_lol.gif

Thank you for all of your ideas!! I was going to buy the gumpaste for the class, but make the fondant. Should I go ahead and try to make the gumpaste or just buy it!

If it makes you feel better I didn't learn about it until recently myself. icon_wink.gif

Hi Penguin! I would definitely buy the gumpaste. It is a lot of fun to play around with and well worth the $5.00 or so, after using your Michael's coupon.

As for fondant, I would definitely definitely NOT buy Wilton unless you only want it for practice and not to serve to someone when you are done. I would try to make the marshmallow fondant, it is very easy, or buy some fondant called "Satin Ice". Both are very tasty.

Wilton fondant is ok for practice but thats about it! icon_smile.gif
