i've never made a cake that needed flowers before. this is for my mom's bd on sat. so there's no time to suddenly learn how to make bc ones, though that's what i'd've liked.

these were made the way i make playdoh roses for the kids. cut a bunch of circles, curl one for the center, surround it with the others as petals.

are they horribly awful or just awfully horrible? of course my mom will love them no matter what, i'm her kid icon_rolleyes.gif but i'd like the cake to be pretty for real.

should i use these or change my design to one that won't need flowers? be honest. also, i'm open to any suggestions on quick and easy roses for the flower inept.

i don't know how to embed pictures from my picture folder here, so just click on my pictures icon below to see them. i only have 2 pics there, so not a lot to scroll through.

thanks,
--brendan

thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif I think you did a great job and I know these will look wonderful on the cake and not just because you're her kid.
Let us know how she loved it and post pics of your cake!!

Well done!

I think they look pretty good for your first attempt! I make my flowers by rolling a ball then I push it out in my palm with my index finger to make a thin petal then wrap that around my center. I use a little crisco in my palm to keep it from sticking. Like everything else it just takes practice. But I think your roses look good. Good luck with you cake! I'll try to attch a pic of my roses I'm referring to.

gothgate,

Your Mom sounds like a lovely lady; but she won't have to pretend she likes your roses - they're great!

Look just like the ones I saw in a past issue of American Cake Decorating - they were ribbon roses.

thanks for the pos feedback guys. i needed that. when you look at something close up for a few hours it's hard to be objective i guess.

JanH, yeah, i lucked out big time in the mom dept. she's always been my best friend, even when i was going through my rebellious years. and my girls think that the sun rises and sets on their maw-maw.

Brendansmum ... hey, mom! icon_smile.gif just kidding. it's just unusual to find people named brendan instead of brandon. thanks for posting that pic. they're beautiful. it was a big "oh yeah, that's what i remember roses looking like!" i'm very allergic to roses, so i don't think i've seen a real one in years. hard to model something you don't see in real life. now i have a pic reference to work towards next time.

the wife just woke up and went in the kitchen. "making roses, eh?" well at least they're recognizable to a half-asleep woman who worked until 4:30 in the morning last night. she's a bartender and someone brought in a store-bought sheet cake for a party. she brought the leftovers home. she said she had a piece before going to bed last night/this morning, but she said we can throw it out... it's not as good as mine. icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I noticed your name was Brendan and of course had to chime in. My poor little guy gets called Brandon all the time! He turns 5 in a week and a half so he has a lot more years of school to correct people.
