This made me smile and I thought I'd share.
My daughter, Chani, 12, had a 10 year old friend over yesterday for a "baking and decorating" afternoon.
It was sooo hard not to take pictures, because she/they were so cute!
My daughter had everything set up to teach her friend how to mix colors, make icing stiffer, etc. She used our practice boards and sheets from the Wilton class we took and taught her friend how to make drop flowers and shells and clowns. They had a ball.
You should have seen her friend's face light up when we said she could take her finished cake home! You would have thought we gave her a million dollars. ![]()
All I had to do was walk them through the use of the mixer and "encourage" my daughter to clean up after it was over!

That is soooo sweet!!!!
Can't wait until I can teach my girls how to decorate! But it'll be a while before that happens... they're 4 & 2... so all they like to do is EAT icing....
Glad you had fun watching your daughter and her friend. A great memory has been made - for you and the girls!!!
What a sweet little story. That's really cute. That reminds me of last week when I was piping some letters out of royal icing and my daughter, 6, wanted to help. when I finished my stuff I let her pipe her name. She had a ball and could not wait till they were dry for her to eat. I made her share her last name with her brothers...I really enjoyed sharing that with her. It was great bonding time. Hopefully its a passion we can both share together. It sounds like your daughter shares your passion and wanted to pass it on, too.
I wish I could have watched with you but I had a similar experience today...
My DD 5 was at the computer while I was watching a couple Aine2 how to's. She watched the elephant one with me and then afterward we had to make an elephant out of play-doh. She tried so hard and got frustrated that it didn't look like the example but she hung in there and is very proud of her red play-doh elephant. She just had to leave it out to show daddy.
i had a cake to do for the fair a few weeks ago ... i also had the unexpected company of a 13 yr old ... do i let her play computer games and just do her own thing? or do i let her help on a "very important" job??? well, i decided that the time we spent together would probably be better than the $2.50 i might make if it won. so ... i let her pick the colors and make most the decisions ... and as she practiced making roses and flower pots i worked on my cake ... goodness it took a lot of time having to stop and explain everything and show her how to do things and wait for her to 'get' it ... well, i wouldn't trade that time for the world now ... we won our $2.50 (she gets her share - $1.25) ... but the best part about it was when she decided she wanted to use her little pieces for a cake she wanted to make for her mom ... NO ... the BEST part was when i got a call from a slightly aggrivated mother, standing in a Wal-Mart, completely clueless as too what her daughter was wanting for her new "hobby" ... being accused of creating a "cake monster" = priceless!!!
I have to post her "first" cake ... she wanted to make it like one of mine she had seen and even made her own marshmallow fnodant ... and she did it with minimal help (1500 miles away and 3 phone calls). The top was for her birthday and the bottom was for her cousin ... there is even a little picket fence and a hay bale on the back ... ![]()
Did you take ANY pictures???
Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. It's so nice to hear about kids who have hobbies other than sitting in front of the tv and playing video games ![]()
Kathi - how nice that your daughter wants to share her passion with her friends. I know that the two of you work closely together, what an honor she wants to share that!
How sweet!
When our oldest was in Girl Scouts, I did a cake decorating class with them. We used two mini bundt cakes for each, stacked on top of one another, to make pumpkins. They covered their pumpkins with orange stars and made stems and leaves and faces. It was so much fun, and they loved it!
Every year we make gingerbread houses, and I bake a house for each of my children and my neice and nephew and we collect different candies for decorating! It is so fun to watch their intent faces and they maneuver the icing bags and tips, and learn so fast! My niece made icicles on her roof last year! By herself! These are the moments I hope they'll remember when I'm gone.
Gotta keep CC in decorator's for the future!
My CC name is texasbecky, but if you look at my profile you will see that it is actually my daughter and me together. I'm 46, she's 28, and we took the Wilton classes together, we make cakes together (she is much better than me), and well, we do just about everything together. Now that I have a 2 yo grand-daughter, she is in there with us waiting to get a bit of icing on her finger. I love hearing about mothers and daughters, and of course grand-daughters, making cakes together. It's such a bonding experience and now I can say that my grand-daughter will be included (if only to lick the icing for now). ![]()

Oh wow I love stories like that. My son is 2 and a half that's him there in the picture and let me tell you he is always in mommy's things I have 3 sets of measuring tools and none of them full.I once had a cake to finish and had to wait a good 4 hours till hubby got home from work to go and buy me a piece my son lost god knows where in the house, playroom, dog basket, toilet bowl.... well you know what I mean!! hahaha
I love all your stories, it reminded me of 2 experiences I had with my granddaughters. My daughter is cake challenged. She does not even enjoy being in the kitchen, but her 2 daughters can't get enough, they want to know everthing. Well when I was teaching at the middle school in my area, during the summer program the girls would come with me and join in the cake decorating class. We would have a little mini contest at the end of the course. The other teachers were the judges, non of the cakes were identified to keep it fair. I will never forget the look on my youngest granddaughters face when she came in 2nd place.
pastryjen, that elephant is so cute!!!
My DD also likes to help me. Sometimes she'll just grab some fondant and start molding stuff. She made a penguin and little hippo whilst I was doing my Welcome Home cake for a friend. ( My DD made the teddy bear on this cake)
Sometimes just letting them be a part of what you are doing gives them an interest in other things. My DD is 14 and if ever I need characters done, she is my character-maker.
I have so many pics of her when she was younger with chocolate coated beaters and chocolate coated cheeks. Flour all over her face. etc.
Doesn't matter how much mess they make - as long as they are having fun.
