Hi
I always make my bows with gum paste made of fondant. It makes them easier to make ( the paste is more elastic) and they dry harder. I learnt off the master "Franmc". This is her recipee and it magic and really easy to make.

500g Fondant
1/3 teaspoon egg white
1 teaspoon gum trag ot equ hardner ( you may have to increase this depending on your gum)
2 teaspoons cream of tartare.

So just knead the fondant well, knead in the gum. Then make a well in the center and knead in the egg white, it will get a bit sticky at this stage. Then knead in the Cream of Tartare and it done! It works best if its rested but you can use it straignt away.

Cheers Min

I use the Wilton gumpaste. Just make sure when you take it out of the can you smooth out all of the lumps. After I mix the gumpaste, I had 1/2 MMF. Then I let it sit for 24 hours. A few suggestions. When making the bow make sure you don't roll the paste out too thin. Cake Journal.com has a good tutorial along with the one on cc. Here is the link to cake journal. http://www.cakejournal.com/2007/06/how-to-make-sugarcraft-bow.html Good luck.

I have had really good luck with adding fixodent to my MMF. I too have no cake supply stores around me, but fixodent is everywhere! icon_lol.gif It makes my MMF dry faster and harder, and of course minty fresh icon_cool.gif

I've not made any but all the tutorials I've seen they assemble them then let them dry. Any time I've ever tried to move fondant once its dried it cracks. HTH

First I would say you need it to dry way more than 1 day! I usually go with 3 days duing the summer/warm months. You can add gumtex (not sure if that is the same listed above). This will make it harden faster too. But plain fondant works fine, just needs more time. Make 3 times more loops than you think you will need - if any break you'll have extra or you'll have a nice loopy bow! Good luck! Practice is the best way! icon_smile.gif

One day is definitely not enough drying time. This is one time you can use Wilton fondant. It tastes lousy but it dries out fast. Any place that sells Wilton fondant may also have Wilton Gumtex.

what type of bow? gift bow or a ribbon bow?

this bow is satinIce fondant with a little bit of dry tylose powder mixed in, assembled ON the cake as i made it. i propped it with rolls of plastic wrap overnight before the cake was needed. (maybe 8 hours?).

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=970093

on this cake, i put 3 bows. i also made them the night before the cake was due. 100% satin ice fondant . the top one was just fine, but i did have an issue with the middle bow (because it was on the SIDE of the cake, not propped on the top) and it did eventually fall apart (right at cutting time though (whew). i think that was more from the fact though that i didnt use anything to GLUE it together!

anyhow, i would definately say that if you need it to dry faster, use gumpaste.

Hi
one other thing you could try, make your bow up, keep the padding etc in it and you can dry it in the oven. You need to put your oven on realy low, so as not to actualy cook but just to warm and if you have a fan put it on. The "just" warm air blown around by the fan will help dry it out faster. I have done this with flowers that i needed to dry quicker because i made them a bit late.

Hope that helps

Fixodent sounds verrrry interesting. so how much Fixodent do you use? Is it powder or a paste, and how do you add it to MMF? Inquiring minds want to know icon_smile.gif

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif I first learned about using fixodent in my MMF from here. Stephanie 214 one of our moderators mentioned it. You can do a search on it, or PM her she is GREAT! But in a nut shell- I use the powdered kind and work in small amounts. squirt some powder on my work board and kneed it into the MMF. I don't have any exact amounts. You will feel it get harder and less elastic. I have some MMF loops I teach how to do bows with that I made ages ago. I assemble them in class with Candy melts. After class was over I left the bow in the hot car. As luck would have it I could pull the loops out of the candy melts wipe them off and I am reusing them to teach again ha ha. That is how tough these loops are. I have carried the same loops to 3 sets of classes.
Here is a bow I did this way...
