My Daughter Wants A "regular" Cake!

Oh Debi - it's so funny that you did this post. I don't have kids, and haven't been doing cakes long enough for my friends and family to get tired of them - they are all so supportive, and want to see my new creations, and a lot of times give me free reign on what to do. I enjoy baking, and love doing this type of stuff, as did my mom when I was growing up. She always was making something, brownies, cakes, cookies, you name it - she did it. My friends thought it was awesome, because their moms never made anything like that - they always got store bought stuff. So, it's totally stupid, but, I envied them - I wanted the store bought cakes and stuff, but never got them unless I was at friend's houses. Now, I look back on it, and think what an idiot I was - who wouldn't want home baked stuff? Whenever the hubband and I go some place where we need to take something, he and I cringe at some of the store purchased things. LOL
have any of you tried the hershey's perfectly chocolate chocolate cake? the recipe's on the back of the cocoa container. it is so stinkin' good. i could dip my head in the frosting.

I gotta say that I'm loving this thread. I haven't laughed out loud [while on the computer] since...well, I can't remember before this thread now!
All the family members wanting regular cakes vs. the decorated kind..makes me think of Eddie Murphy's Delirious and he was wanting to get a McDonald's [or was it BK?] burger and his mom was telling him no because we have perfectly good burgers here ....

i could dip my head in the frosting.
Yummy! Great picture in my head....just put the bowl on my head! ![]()
...and he wanted the McD's burger because it didn't have big old chunks of green pepper in it...
My kids still love cake. My son likes taking cake to his girlfriend's house so her mom can eat it. He doesn't like this woman and she can't resisit cake so she's gained alot of weight and my cakes haven't helped any.
He's such a rascal.
My husband recently told me that he wants rainbow chip icing from a can for his birthday and I told him no. ![]()
My mom did character cakes for us when I was a kid and I remember coveting grocery store cakes and canned icing. She hardly ever bought cookies and when she did they were oreos so I always wanted the store chocolate chip cookies. My kids are the same way, the oldest is getting to where he prefers my cakes (and he's gotten pretty into the different fillings) but my little one has to look every time we go to the store.
Since I started decorating cookies alot they have pretty much quit asking for store ones, that's to keep me from gaining weight since I hate sugar cookies and my kids are so skinny they need the extra calories. ![]()
seriously, i try to get rid of my kids when i make it so i can lick the beaters myself. i swear they can hear the ding dang mixer from a 2 block radius. it has occurred to me to put the bowl on my head. really, try it and get back to me. i am a frosting expert. -the eating frosting that is!
Reminds me of my son. When he turned 10 last December, he said he just wanted a choc cake with choc frosting and ONLY IF I WANTED TO, I could write Happy Birthday Samuel on it!
Mine requested no writing at all AND no candles, just cake (or cookies).

When I first got into cake decorating, many many years ago
, I did cakes for my cousin's children. He has 4 kids and they were young enough to be excited about picking their cake from the current Wilton book and having me re-create it. One year, young John really wanted an ice cream cake, so thats what his mother got him. When it was time to serve the cake, he took his piece and started to eat it with gusto. When finished.. he turned to me and said... " Ginny, this is the best cake you ever made!!" ![]()

To this day (some 20 years later) we still remind him of that day!! ![]()

OMG! My Basset Hound is the same way! My utility room is next to the kitchen and that 's where him and his brother (he's a mutt) stays. When he hears the mixer, he sits at the gate and whines the most pitiful whine because he loves the batter. I always scrape the bowl for him. He loves banana pudding too.
Update: daughter rides to school with a neighborhood friend and daughter is telling friend about her good 'ole fashioned regular canned icing cake and how "...it didn't have any of that home-made stuff on it!"
Friend LUVS my cakes. She frequently comes into the house and says "any cake laying around mom?" (most of the teenagers who come to my house call me mom). According to my daughter, friend was shocked that daughter didn't want mom's icing and reminded her "....that icing feeds you, ya know!"
Friend sent in a message that any time I wanted to make a "Real" cake, just give her a call and she'll be over to help eat it!
At least I have ONE teenage fan! ![]()

Love that! I feel like she's just so right!
Right now my kids want any and all cakes. They love looking at cake pics on here and I don't think that my son will be able to decide what kind of cake to have for his birthday in December. Probably SpongeBob, Spiderman, Darth Vader, Thomas, Cars, Transformers...oh all on one cake!! ![]()

Among my son's friends I have got the reputation that I make EVERYTHING homemade . One his buddies(can you call a boy a ditz?) was surprised to see us unloading groceries from the car. He later told my son he was disapointed to know I bought food at the store, he thought I made everything. My son has a very expressive face, so I can only imagine the look this boy got.
My son told me he just told the boy that our wheat field had taken a beating in the spring with the freeze, the chickens won't lay and Bessie is on strike.
All of his friends find my cooking and baking amazing. I don't dare let them see I have pot pies and hot dog buns in the freezer!!
Indy.. I checked your photos, I am sooooo disapointed there is no pic of the Regular Cake! ![]()
Yah, I agree with KansaLaura, I too looked for the "regular" cake pic. I am sooo disappointed!! LOL.........
Its funny, my Mom always made our birthday cakes and I remember asking her one year if I could just have a store bought one like the rest of my friends! I'm lucky, my kids still love it when I make their cakes, but they really don't eat it - usually just the frosting!
So she has her cake after dinner and I ask her "How's your cake?"
She grins and says, "Mmmmmm! Deliciously generic!"
LOL! I love your daughter! She's hilarious.
Now, time to put that cake pic up. Really, after all this set up, you can't let us down! ![]()
Ohhhh! Just remembered something my *spoiled rotten* son said!
He's sooo opposite "regular cake" it's not funny. We were packing to move to our new house the week before his 8th grade graduation. We were moving the day after. I promised him I do my best for a 'spread' after graduation, but I may have to make some adjustments.
I am so proud of what I came up with, I'm busily packing away the items in the freezer when he catches me red-handed with a box of frozen mini cream puffs from Sam's. WHAT are those?? I said, THOSE go with THIS (holding up a can of chocolate fudge frosting). And these? he said as he waved a package of Sam's sub buns in the air. I waved back packaged ham and turkey!
I had NO kitchen to speak of at that point and the brat is getting huffy over frozen cream puffs and purchased buns. He'll never marry! I'm stuck with him for life! ![]()
By the way, that experience taught me that frozen cream puffs dipped in microwaved chocolate canned frosting is darn good!
Kids... ya gotta love 'em.. right??
oh boy can I relate to this topic.
Dh asked for hot cupcakes with just a smear of bc for his birthday two weeks ago. So I did it just like he asked. Good wifey, right?
Nope two days ago he askes me why I didn't make him a birthday cake this year. Then tells me the very detailed list of cake flavors, filling and creamer inhanced bc. WHAT!! I did what he asked and he gets amnesia.
He didn't remember any of it ![]()

I get another chance to be creative this week.
My ds(turning 7) asked for a spider man cake with buildings and webs.
A boy after my own heart.

My family doesn't eat much cake anymore. I guess I was practicing just a little to much in the beginning. My daughter will turn 12 next month and she started middle school this year and she has already come to me with a picture of the cake she wants. She is also a member of CC so she pulled this picture http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_496813.htm and said since she has so many new friends and she would like to have a sleepover and invite them all. She would like one for each girl, if its ok with you mommy? Now I have not molded many figures so this will be a new thing for me. I guess I am happy she still wants me to do her cakes.
I also have alot of kids that call me mom, like indydebi so anythime I see them or they stop by they are looking for cake or something sweet and I get the puppy dog eyes because there isn't anything made.
The only time I really give them cake now is on their birthdays or if I am decorating one for a customer and their are cake scraps they grab them.
I guess I need find some new people to practice on.lol.

Sounds like CC Slumber Party fodder to me! Remember getting soap suds in your hair and making outlandish hairdos?? Can you imagine what we could do with frosting???
