Help seems like I am spending a long time smoothing my cakes? Should I use a thinner layer of icing, I like mine to looks as smooth as fondant but I don't want to spend that much time on it... HELP!

Let it crust, then use a Viva paper towel to smooth it. OR (I haven't tried this yet) use a sponge paint roller on it.

Melvira's sponge roller method works like a dream and it's really quick and easy. My last few cakes were done using this method. The doll cake in my photo's looks like fondant......according my my DH that is.
