I was planning to make a guitar cake, but I'd like the guitar to protrude at an angle from a sheet or round cake...something like the Hard Rock guitar does, if you're familiar with that. Any ideas on how to do that?

What about making a guitar shaped cookie, and baking it on a stick? My other suggestion would be to make a plaque out of a 50/50 mixture of gumpaste and fondant.

I'm not sure how much thickness you would like the guitar to have, but keep in mind that the thicker you make the guitar the more weight your cake will have to support. That said, I would opt for a round, and make a double layer cake.

If the neck doesn't "have" to be edible - why not do it with foam? Takes away the weight issue.

Have you thought about possibly using a (clean) wire hanger shaped to make the basic support stucture of the guitar bridge and then cover it in Rice Krispy treats then fondant? This is similar to what I had to do for the antlers when I made my deer head cake.
