i have my first wedding cake to make and the bride has chosen a 2 tier cake the sizes will be 10" and a 7" with each cake being around 4" high covered in mmf with gumpaste swirls attached to the cake painted silver then i will be making some larger ribbon style roses and leaves to put on the top of the cake and also on the middle tier and around the bottom.

i did tell her around $250.00, but i think she was a bit shocked, the cakes will be mud cakes with a ganache filling.

i have worked out the raw costs and that totals roughly $125.00. am i under cutting myself or is a total of $250.00 a reasonable price!!!

i also know that some people in my town, in the past have paid $200.00 just to have a wedding cake decorated that did not include making the actual cake. these cake were also the older style of cake decorating which i am more on the modern side.

I do live in a semi small town, so i have taken that into consideration with the above price.

any input on this would be greatly appreciated....

thanks guys
kylie

I've alwys heard that costs x 3 is reasonable. This excludes fondant, gumpaste flowers, etc.

Hi Ibsmeck

thank you for your response i am going to charge the $250.00.

as for my bratz cake the black outline is licorise, its the really soft variety that you can roll into snake shapes.

Don't, don't, don't go down. Don't undersell yourself. Your work is so worth it.

For all the work going into it, $250.00 sounds like a bargain!

The price sounds very fair considering all the work that will go into making it. After all, a boring square cake from chain bakeries like Ferguson Plarre will set you back about $30.

Was her shock a good shock or a bad shock. Your price sounds very reasonable and possibly a little on the low side. If her shock was a good shock, maybe you could throw in a small anniversary layer on the side to show her how much you appreciate her business. I always try to throw in something a little extra for my clients so that they know that I appreciate them as much as they appreciate me.

Hey blush1

her shock was bad shock i think, i am doing more on this cake for that price to show my appreciation as she is my first wedding cake.

she is getting a super decorated cake so that i may get more business from her word of mouth, and now she gets to be the first bride to have her cake sit on one of my newest inventions ( the cake pillow).

when i looked at some cake sites that sell and decorate wedding cakes they would be charging heaps more for the cake i will be making. i have told her she is getting this cake under price as it is my first one.

i guess you could say she is being my guinea pig!!!!!

Kylie
Where in Australia are you? I think it sounds like an absolute bargain!! I would charge over $300 for a cake like that. It will be a LOT Of work to bake those cakes, tort them and decorate them, plus all your ingredients. In the end you'll ge lucky to get $5 an hour, depending on how fast you work. I would guess that if she was shocked at the price she has not done any research at all on what cakes cost. You could suggest that you can cut $50 off the price, if she supplies you with all the ingredients!!! haahhahahahaha, you give her a list, and a heart attack is sure to follow soon after : )
Nati
PS: Love your cakes by the way : )

Kylie
I have actually heard of Stawell, i may have even driven past there on my way to Adelaide once upon a time : )
Oh and dont worry about not charging enough for your first cake. I had NO idea what to charge when i first started, and no idea how to calculate the costs ( i was only adding ingredients of the cake, not all the other bits and pieces [IDIOT!!])
This was my first wedding cake (that i sold)
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo-13457.html
I charged her under $400, i can't remember if it was $350 or $375, whatever it was, it was nowhere close the the $1000 that it's worth. Live and learn eh? icon_smile.gif
And also, on the compliments, im serious, your Matisse cake is fantastic, and so are your Bratz cakes, i love them!!! Oh yeah and the topsy turvy cake is sooooo cool!!!!
cheers
Nati
