Just wanted to let all my fellow Aussie CCers know that Coles is selling 'Cake, Biscuit & Pastry' Flour. It is by one of the big flour companies (I cant remember who sorry). I bought a 1kg box for $3.00 (I think it was on special, usually $3.30)
Woot! Now I can make all the cool recipes I've found that use cake flour!!
I've noticed they've switched Pure Icing Sugar over to bags instead of the boxes, I finally found it last week after spending the last month thinking they had gotten rid of it altogether!
Hi,
Just wondering if anybody knows where I can get "Meringue Powder" in Aus??
I have been lurking for a Long while on CC and want to try a few yummy looking recipes on here.
Hey debs, in Australia you will find meringue powder sold as Pavlova Magic in the egg shapes, usually found where the jelly is!
Wow, thanks for that. There are many recipes I'd like to try using cake flour. I guess it will be ages before it hits Tassie, though, but I'll keep a look out!

(google search to find this was: difference cake flour regular flour -- a very simple search)
Thanks Doug, I didn't think to Google it.
I also found a Post under General "Cake Flour Vs All Purpose Flour see the difference" this a link to the picture http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_871023.html. Between the info Doug found and the pictures I'll definitely give it a go.
scgriffiths ask at the Enquiries counter see if they can get it in it doesn't hurt to enquire.

thanks nicole. I didn't realize that pavlova magic was the same as meringue powder. It makes sense now that I think about it. LOL
Checked the box last night - its Anchor brand. They have a whole new range of flour out. They have plain cake flour & self raising cake flour, I think they also have pizza dough flour.
I compared the labels of cake flour vs plain flour - the cake flour has about 10% less gluten in it
OMG!! Thanks for the pavlova magic tip!! I was wondering where I'd get meringue powder from!!
Happy Caking
Thanks, Incognito - that's great news
I've been making my own with plain flour and cornflour, but I'm sure the real thing will give a better result!
Yeah we should ask for our own little sticky with translations American to Aussie!
Top idea, Nicole!!! And - did you know that you can buy American Cake mixes in Australia, now? www.usafoods.com.au They are based in Melbourne, but will post.
Thanks for the Meringue Powder tip! that one has had me confused! & I have been to embarrased to ask - VERY MUCH A NEWBIE Although I have been a member for a while.
USA Foods.com.au is brilliant I got a big tub of crisco the other day to try all the lovely buttercreams that are on here and they only charged Aus Post rates to send it wasn't expensive for 3lbs (& I got some ranch pringles - YOU HAVE TO TRY THESE if you buy something from them!)
Ok, just to clarify...cake flour is different because it has less gluten in it than normal flour ? So, could you substitute gluten free flour for it ?? feel like a dummy asking !!!
Oh Nicole, thanks for the ( big slap on the forehead ) tip on pavlova magic !!! D'oh.....
Jules06, no you cannot subsitute gluten free flour for cake flour and get the same results.
Less gluten means the cake will be lighter, no gluten tends to make cakes that taste really different according to my daughter. The cakes also tend to be tougher.
Coles are also stocking sponge flour under the Snowflake brand also.
OMG thanks for the flour tip. I always wondered where besides shipping it I could get it. I I used the pavlova egg in the hope it was the same as meringue powder, now to find me some pastry pride without shipping.
Any aussies out there know that one????

Ohhh thank you. reat prices for postage as. With price of fuel it costs me that just to drive down to any store at the moment.
I bought a box of the Anchor Cake Flour last week and tested it with Toba Garrett's yellow cake recipe which I'd made several times before, variously with standard homebrand plain flour and with bleached flour. I didn't notice any difference using the cake flour, if anything, the cake was not as tender as usual. So I would save my money in future, at $3/kg it ain't cheap.
