Yikes!! Just Entered My First Competition!

Hooray, I'll see you there!!
One thing about competitions and classes.... As sad as it may seem, competition guidelines actually do not refer to Wilton classes when they say a certain number of class hours. They mean specialty classes like Nick Lodge, etc.
When I was new to competing, I had the same confusion so I asked to be sure, and that's what they mean. You could easily go to the Adult Beginner division. I compete in the Adult Semi-Pro division. If you've already sent Loydene your entry form, email her and tell her you made a booboo and ask her to correct your level.
What category (categories) did you enter? You're going to get hooked on cake shows! ![]()

How nerve wracking ... I won't be able to sleep between now and the day of the competition if it was me. I'm sure you are very excited.
What is your design ? is it a one layer cake? is it a dummy ?
I wish I was close to OK, then maybe, I will enter too.
Well, good luck,
and keep us posted.
I emailed her about what division I should enter, but didn't hear back from her. Deadline is Friday so had to get the entry form in the mail (hoping it gets there in time!). I'm using a Hotmail account and they sometimes get blocked or end up in junk mail so may try her again. Think I also saw a phone number in the entry brochure. Will call if I have to.
I recently got the Wilton pumpkin/witch/scarcrow pan and that got me to thinking about a neat 3d cake (since I LOVE those cakes!!). I'm going to do the scarecrow, something along the lines of what's on the box, then put it on top of more cakes so it looks like a whole body from about the chest up. I'll do it in fondant and put overalls on him, a striped shirt, gloves, hat, etc. Will put a few crows around the board, maybe on his head since he's such a friendly scarecrow he's useless at his job!
Think I'm going to make (if I can figure out how) a bunch of corn tassels like you see when the corn is growing in the field. That would make it look like he's standing in a field of corn chatting with the crows.
What do you think? Now the question is, can I pull it off! Afterall, it's about a 5-6 hr drive from here to Tulsa!
I am sure you will do fine. I am driving two days from Minnesota with my nine and my six year olds junior cake.
Just be sure that it is your own design. You can go to the website which I am sure you have been to view past entries.(to get an idea of what people do)
I was so embarrassed at some of the cakes I did. Needless to say I know what to expect this year! I took home two 2nd place ribbons and a bronze certificate for my wedding cake. I am so thrilled about this year!
moydear77, your driving from minn. to tulsa to enter the show? you rock girl! I live in kansas city, and If I thought I would come home with a ribbon, I would possibley enter...and justify the gas money and hotel cost. that is my dream, to be good enough to enter, (and win something) at the sugar show in tulsa. man, I wish I could go to that, just to see your work, all of your work. you guys that are entering need to put a cc on your entry cards or something, so people will know which cakes are yours. ...ans which ones to cheer for. :}
when is the sugar art show?
I'll be in oklahoma the first weekend in oct. if it were on that weekend, I would drive over to tulsa to check out the show.
good luck to all of you!

Well on Friday the are taping a $10,000 Food Network Challenge. On Sunday they will have all cakes on display that have been entered and around five or six is the awards. The divisional will be done judging and Sunday morning they leave small pieces of ribbon on the entries that win first, second and third. It is real fun!
rajinaren,
Thanks! I've only been decorating cakes for about 3 months but am having a blast! I'm a little nervous about the competition, but I'm just doing it for fun and after seeing the entries from past years, I don't expect to place, just have fun. And it gets us out of town and away from the remodeling for a while (which we need badly!)
Oh my gosh....I know EXACTLY how you feel!!! I am actually, right now, taking a break from decorating one of my entries to my very first competition. This one is in Atlantic City the end of Oct.
I am so nervous cause I have no idea what caliber cakes there will be. Oh well....the good thing is we can make cake dummies so I am able to work a little at a time.
Good luck to all of you (us)!!!!
Hey guys,
Does anyone know how I can get information about the cake show in NJ in October? Also, does anyone know about any shows that are on the east coast NJ to GA? I would be willing to travel to go and just view.

Good luck ME2 and moydear and remember to HAVE FUN! I entered my first competition in Austin last year and had a lot of fun (after the ribbons were handed out!). I agree with everyone though that you would still be considered in the beginner division.
I hope to make it to Oklahoma next year (just to watch), so until then, I'll live vicariously through you guys!
ME2, don't forget to take at least three in-progress photos of your sculpture as proof that it's real cake. One show I was in, a person's idea of "in-progress" photos was to take a picture of the cake mix in the mixer and the cake being boxed up. LOL, that's not exactly what the judges were looking for! ![]()
