Measure Diamonds For A Round Cake

I am making a "funky" cake and want to know the best way to measure for diamond shapes going around it so that they turn out even. Is there an east way to measure and mark for this??

I am sure there is some mathamatical way but I would take a strip of paper that goes around the pan plus extra alowwing for frosting and then di it on that by folding and just trying to see what you like

well from personal experience it's freakin hard man. I would get an impression mat in a heartbeat next time.
