I'm baking a barnyard cake for my son's 1st birthday next week and got some great ideas from the gallery for what I want it to look like. This is the first time I've ever used fondant to make figures.
I just a barn shape out of 1 3/16" thick styrofoam and will cover it with icing and stick it in the cake with dowels. Then I'll set the animals around it. I think I'm going to use a little rectangle of rice crispy treat for a hay bale for the chickens to sit on and around. Then the cow will be sitting in a bunch of grass (which is why I didn't give him legs). The pigs will be sitting in a patch of chocolate icing to look like mud.
What do y'all think?
WOW these are fantastic! If this is your first time with fondant figures you are going to be a star!

You did a really great job!! I love the sheep & the pigs especially Be sure to post pics of the finished cake
they are so cute!!! I made a barnyard cake years ago but I did not know about MMF then........I just made the barn out of graham crackers glued together with royal icingg.........if you wanted the barn to be edible that would be an easy option. I made bails of hay out of marshmallows that I frosted and rolled in colored coconut and it worked out really well and they were really yummy too....I love your animals
You did a great job. Love the pigs! The way you described your cake sounds like it is really going to be cute. I'm anxious to see it finished. Be sure to post it.

I was thinking of doing a barnyard cake for our county fair next year, since I missed it this summer - I'll definitely watch for your finished picture, because your animals are adorable!!
Way to go!
Just wondering where you got such fantastic ideas to make your animals. They are so cute and pretty!
can anbody tell me how to make it....
I just used the white Wilton fondant that comes in the box. I colored it with the Wilton gel coloring.
I've never done anything with Fimo/Polymer clay, but I've seen it done on TV Basically I just made each animal in pieces - and most of those pieces started out as a ball. For instance, with the pig, I made a big ball and then kinda rolled it on the table a little (I was using a corian cutting board covered in parchment) so that it was more of a cylinder shape. Then I rolled a ball for the head. To attach the head to the body, I used a toothpick to kinda rough up the surface of the body where the head would attach and did the same thing to the bottom part of the head. Using a paint brush I put just a tiny bit of water into the rough area to make it a little more sticky and then stuck the head on. I did the same thing for the feet...just made 4 round balls and stuck them on the bottom. For the ears I just smooshed some fondant flat and then used a knife to cut out a triangle. I put the triangle kinda on the back of the head and smoothed it into the head, making it wrap around to the sides. For the eyes, I just poked a hole with a toothpick with some black coloring on it. For the snout, I made a little ball and smooshed (that's the technical term!) it flat and stuck it on the face with just a dab of water.
That's basically how they all were done. Just break each animal down into little shapes and stick them all together. For the wool on the sheep, I rolled a bunch of tiny little balls and then smooshed them on to the body.
I got the ideas for what I wanted the cow, pigs and chickens to look like straight from KarenOR's farm cake (http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-photos-by-KarenOR.html). Hope it's ok that I totally copied! The sheep I found online on a clay site.
