I'm new...so this may be a realllllly dumb question!
Can you use store bought frosting for decorating with a bag and tip? Is it thick enough?
Depends on the brand and flavor. Some thin out quickly from the heat of your hand. The more you stir it smooth, the softer, thinner it gets.
Some people have said you can use canned frosting if you chill it first, but I've never tried. I do know that you can add powdered sugar to it and get a good consistancy to decorate with.
I should have said that making buttercream is not all that difficult, and there are great recipes right here on CC.
Thanks for the tips and feedback! I would normally make the frosting but somehow I have lost the whisk attachment for my kitchen aid and only have my paddle...can I use that for buttercream?
yes, use the paddle. What kind of buttercream do you make? When I took classes I was told to NOT use the whip, only the paddle.
i use the paddle attachment for my buttercream, don't think the wisk would work too well anyway! The buttercream dream receipe on here is really good.
I always use the paddle for making my buttercream and have never had a problem with it. In fact, I rarely use the whisk attachment, except for whipping heavy cream.
I used the whisk one time and it put way too much air in the buttercream. So I always use the paddle now.
Yeah! I will try the buttercream then. It does make sense to use the paddle now that I think about it, I guess I'm getting confused between the BC and some of the whipped fillings I'm looking at!
I haven't made a buttercream from scratch for a really long time so I don't have a recipe. I will check out the BC dream on here.
I'm new to cake decorating and haven't taken a class yet, just going off of some learning by osmosis from friends and being a baker in general by hobby. But I have to say, I'm already addicted to this site! I'm excited to try the cake extender ideas too!
