I just got a call from someone who wants a baby shower cake (she was at a shower where one of my other cakes was) ... she wants white cake, strawberry filling, and cream cheese frosting! I explained that cream cheese frosting is very, very goopy to decorate with and I don't usually do it. I asked if I could use cream cheese as a filling and she said no, they really want to give the mom-to-be her favorite. She said she would email me a picture, and asked for a basic price quote, and I said it would be $2/serving (she wants the cake for 30-40 people). She said it was more than she was wanting to spend! Am I crazy? Is she?

2-Tier SQUARE cake, cream cheese frosting and strawberry filling. Here's the pictures she sent me that she likes. What would you guys charge??

p.s. these cakes aren't mine, I don't know where they came from.

Sounds like she need a reality check... She wants one of those cakes and thinks $60 - $80 is too much? icon_surprised.gif

Well if she comes to her senses you can use the crusting cream cheese icing recipe on here. I have used it to decorate with successfully. Anytime someone wants a tiered cake it should be treated like a wedding cake since the construction, decorations are more involved. $2 a slice is a fair price.

OMG! Tell her to go to walmart and get a cheap cake there!!!
I think $2 is fine and even a little bit under, don't sell it for less.

My basic cakes start at $3.00, but I *could* afford to do smaller cakes like those for $2.50 (never wedding cakes though). I wouldn't go less unless your area differs.

Seems reasonable to me... just wanted to give another thumbs up on the Crusting Cream Cheese Icing recipe though, it worked great for me!

icon_biggrin.gif $2 per person is a good price. Most of the places charge $2.75 to 3.75 a slice. If she wants a cheaper cake just give her the choice of a cheaper cake. Some people like options. Give her options and she may end up spending more money Most people have no idea how much time and money is put into a cake. thumbs_up.gif

exactlly what pope said.......I would stick firmly with the 2 dollars a slice.......that's more than reasonable for those cakes.......then I would ask her what she wants to spend and then find some pics to show HER what her budget will allow.......she may like to go with one you choose or she may fork over the extra dough realizing that she's not getting any cakes like those for cheaper.

After reading through her email I found that the baby shower is set for the day after I have a wedding cake. I really don't want to do 2 big cakes in 2 days. So I did a sketch and quoted her $70. If she doesn't take it, my heart won't break.

Thanks for all the support, guys!

Our ara Wal MArt charges 1.75 per slice for wedding cakes and I will charge $2 a slice. My very best friend was telling me my prices might be to high.lol. I told her that they can't get MY kind of cake at WalMArt so if they want custom they will pay an extra .25. Have you found out how much the local bakeries, even the dicount ones charge?

I agree with everyone....$70 or even $80 is reasonable. Most people don't realize that it not only takes a lot of time, but we can't buy our materials in the bulk amounts that Walmart does. Stick to your guns...

I think your price quote is reasonable. I am new to this whole thing--just doing stuff for us at home. Personally, I am not even sure I like the set up of the first pict. The stars are cute and all, but the streamer things are odd to me. I think your cake sketch is cute and will be fine.

Let us know what happens.

You are very reasonable especially for a filled cake.
I would have charged at least $2.50.
People amaze me at how cheap they become over a cake.

Now she wants fondant booties or those B-A-B-Y blocks on the cake to make it look more like a baby shower cake. Or the rocking horse (in one of those first photos). I really don't do cakes with plastic stuff stuck on them, if I can help it. I still haven't gotten a firm commitment either way. Grrrrr.

I wish these people would start thinking in terms of serving dessert to 40 people. Could you do that for $2/person at a restaurant? Of course not. Plus no restaurant would spend hours and hours making it a custom piece of art.
