Ok, here is the newest cake to emerge from my kitchen and the first since we moved. It is a Colette Peters design. Originally wanted to modify it quite a bit but ran out of time and energy what with all the moving boxes to deal with It was fun and I am really pleased with how it turned out. I really am enjoying sculpting/carving cakes.
I used the Sylvia's Red Velvet cake recipe from cc recipes (4 layers). It was delicious! Very moist! Just couldn't resist having red cake to cut into when cutting into this poor guy
Any suggestions for making this easier next time would be great.... I can't even begin to count the hours this took! The pay off, however, was worth it! Our son love his "Lizard-Dinosaur Cake"!!!
WOW, how amazing! and how great that you took the time and effort during one of a persons most stressful tome to make your son's birthday a memorable one!!
That cake recipe sound absolutely delish!
that's adorable!!!!! Amazing job!
(I love that book - well all of Colette's books, lol - but I have yet to try out one of the designs in there.)
What a masterpiece! You should be so proud of yourself -- and your son will ALWAYS remember this cake!
I think it's wonderful!!! Great job!
I did a lizard cake using Collette's carving technique, but just covered it with fondant. Don't know if that was any esier or not. I just didn't want to mess with cutting all of the circles and stripes! He's in my photos if you want to see him.
I wouldn't even know where to start on making something like this so I can't give you any suggestions but I can tell you how great it looks! It turned out so very cute. Nice job.
Thanks everyone! Wow, what an ego boost you all are! And, yes, the red velvet was delicious! I will definitely be holding on to that recipe!
crablegs - let's see, it is two 9x13 red velvet cakes cut in half lengthwise (so you end up with cakes measuring 4 1/2x13) and stacked. Then started carving the arch of the back then the head. I was so paranoid that I would screw up the shape of the body and have to start over that I kept sticking my template onto the side of my cake to make sure I was getting it right
The cake stops at the middle of the uppermost wide green stripe on the tail. The rest of the tail structure is extra wilton fondant that I wanted to use up since it wouldn't be eaten. The decorations on the body are all in Satin Ice (lovin' Satin Ice btw).
Legs and tongue are done in gumpaste. This was also my first time using luster dusts. Now those are cool and I'm looking forward to 'playing' with them again!
Spectacular cake---I'm no lizard fan but I love this one with all the colors & stripes. All this and moving too---my hat's off to you !!! Hope your son loved it too

That reminds me of the armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias!!!
BTW your cake totally rocks!
Shelle
I wanted to try the red velvet cake recipe you talked about, but can't find a Sylvia's Red Velvet in the recipe section....can you point me in the right direction?
Oh my goodness everyone, sorry! Brain fried - it is Sarah's Red Velvet (not Sylvia) in the cc recipes Eek!
Thanks for all the kind words! It was definitely a LABOR of LOVE
