I guess this post may be moved, that's ok....
Well, like I had posted that Tuesday night I had been invited to participate on a live show on TV. They asked me to bring some cakes, everything from the best seller, to the most erotic, to the most...."unusual".
I spent all day baking and decorating ( custom decorated mind you ) about 10 cakes!!
I load up the car...get to the studio.....
IT"S NEXT TUESDAY...............Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
But, it gave me a chance to see the show...and I don't think that I want to be on this show.
It's like a HOWARD STERN SHOW, but with LESS CLASS!
I don't want to promote my cakes on this type of show...but then again it's free publicity.
I don't know what to do...I'm not sure what I should do.
I do make "ADULT THEMED" cakes, but I try to make them as "pretty" and classy as possible..( for the type of cake they are..lol)
So far my customers have been, young, hip and upwardly mobile...my average order is $50.00
I'm thinking that after this show, I'm going to get the type of customer that is not only going to come to waste my time "LOOKING AT DIRTY PICTURES" indulging in "CAKE PORN"...or calling me on the phone to talk dirty. ![]()
I knew that starting this type of business that was always a threat, I've been very good at maintaining decorum...so far..lol ![]()
But, I feel that participating in this show, is just opening the door wide open to turn class into crass.
Opinions please...I mean, I know I'm lucky that I've been invited to be on live TV....but doesn't necessarily meant that its a good thing!
thanks for your help and opinions!
If it was my personal choice and if I was in your shoes, I would not do the show. I mean after all you are already getting cake business and word of mouth from friend to friend to friend is going to bring in a lot better business then the few people that may listen to a "less then classy" talk show! That is just my personal opinion, but usually gut instict will lead you in the right direction anyways and it sounds like yours is leading you away from this. Either way you will still have your cake business and buddies to fall back on !
LESS classy than howard stern, hmm think i'd steer clear. i'd be afraid they would just make a big joke about it and wouldn't get any serious business like you said. cause are these people watching this show to see real stuff, or just for s**** and grins ![]()
Go with your gut feeling on this one ... if it is not in line with the type of business and customers you want, steer clear! There are other ways to promote your cakes if you're looking for more business (maybe those "girls-only" parties that have become popular lately)? I haven't been to one, but you're reaching a more targeted audience maybe more in line with your desired clients?
Just curious, is it a local cable access show?
Cindy
no, it's not a cable show, it's on regular TV but late at night..it's one of those crazy panel shows..
And I'm really thinking twice about this and I never second guess myself..I'm just upset that I have all those cakes and I can't sell them...
I make everything to order.
I enjoy the one on one with the customer, discussing every little detail with them, that's what makes it fun for me...the type of hair, skin color on the little cartoon figures, the type of clothing..etc..etc..
giving them a little extra..like if I do a caricature of someone with glasses...adding a little gel to make them look like glass....little touches that once the customer notices, sends them to the moon!! lol
sigh..
and..the Tuesday show is probably going to be on the same time that the TV interview is going to be on and I don't want overexposure.
I had the Miami Herald article...( they gave me a front cover and a 2 pages spread inside, that was great!!!)
But, then again....you gots to get it while the getting is good!
but on the upside..
Miami has an EROTIC MUSEUM..( Yes! someone decided to "DISPLAY" their erotic art..hahahah) and I've had 2 chefs call me to book...parties of over 300 with me!! wooooooooooo hoo. I called in my chef instructor, since he's the one that does the pastries...but I WILL be having MY finger in THOSE pies for sure!!! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!) it's late..too much powdered sugar fumes!

Those are called "passion" parties and yes, you are correct! I have had a lot of calls on those...so many in fact that I have a "special" cake and rate for them!
They are so cute these "PASSION PARTY" ladies...so sweet, some of them are just there to "spice" up the married life, you know what I mean? So, they are very happpy to see MR. HAPPY show up at the party!
They have a great ole giggle and go home in a better mood! I like that!
THAT makes ME happy!
