Finding The Best Cookie Recipe...
Baking By giovanna Updated 29 Aug 2006 , 9:25pm by MariaLovesCakes
Ok, so I tried the no fail recipe several times and I really like it but I wasn't in love with the taste. It was good but I was hoping for more of a sugar cookie taste. So I tried two other recipes, Martha Stewarts sugar cookie recipe and Wilton's roll out cookie recipe. Martha's was fantastic and the cookies held their shape beautifully. However, I've been reading that people like the lemon flavor in her recipe and this recipe didn't have any lemon...is there another recipe out there? And finally, the Wilton roll out cookies were awful! I couldn't even get them off of the parchment paper to bake. Did I do something wrong?
Are there any other recipes that you think are wonderful? I mean, I only have about 100 cookies in my kitchen now, why not add more ![]()
Thanks so much! This site has been invaluable!
I've made a few bad NF batches. I've found that the BEST is with pure vanilla, not the clear stuff. I thinks it's great, everyone has their opinion.
As for Martha's, she has a few. Sunflower Sugar, Sugar etc. I'm pretty sure that's is the regular sugar. It has lemon zest and I think lemon juice.
Maybe someone else can help?
Hmmm, I'll have to try the vanilla I normally use. I was out and only had the clear Wilton that I use for my white cakes. I'll see if that makes a difference.
I even did a little taste test this morning at my son's gym class and all 4 ladies picked the Martha recipe. Luckily, it held it's shape as well as the no fails but the no fails make more cookies so I'm hoping the vanilla makes the difference.
Thanks for the tip!
i have had nothing but compliments with the no fail recipe..and i love it too...try with real vanilla...
and remember, they get more sugary with the royal icing decor...so, try decorating some, wait for it to set up and try them...changes the taste

I am surprised that you didn't like the Wilton roll out cookie recipe! I LOVE IT! Its the one I use all the time and my husband even says that it tastes better than Cookies By Design cookies!
Which recipe did you use? I know that they changed their recipe.
I use the older recipe:
Wilton Roll Out Cookies
(Appx 20-24 cookies)
1 cup of butter or margarine
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp of vanilla
2 tsp of baking powder
3 cups of flour
Preheat oven to 400 F. In a large bowl, cream the butter and the sugar. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well. Mix baking powder with flour and add to butter mixture one cup at a time. It will become stiff, so you can knead the last cup of flour by hand. DO NOT CHILL DOUGH.
Divide dough into 2 balls. Roll out on a floured surface to 1/8 inch and cut with desired cookie cutters.
Bake for 6-7 minutes or until lightly browned.
I used this one from their website, it was so sticky and I had to peel it off of the parchment paper LOL. Here it is:
/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 3/4 cups flour
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
I'll try yours though, I want to try a bunch now while I have the time to experiment, I'm doing the same

I've never seen that one before.... I used the one that they had on their older catalog, the ones from 2000-2001.
It is really good and buttery... I tell you, people love this recipe.
If it gets a little sticky when you roll it out, just add a bit more flour.
Let me know how you like it.
