Cupcakes for me, especially if you use those fruit and nut cups as you will not be constrained with muffin pans.

thanks I'm thinking of giving away some at the school's open house but I'm afraid I might need too much!

Cost wise, I think cookies are cheaper. However, they are a lot more time consuming. Cupcakes that are simply decorated are much easier to do.

It depends on what you hand in mind for each and what you have on hand. Cake mix is cheap and so is flour and sugar. Ir Depending on what you hand in mind. Cupcakes for me, but I love to do them both

Muriel, what friut and nut cups?

They are the pleated fruit and nut cups, sometimes also called souffle cups and look like these: http://68.178.206.191/solocup/catalog/shop/productdetail.asp?prodid=6440

I use the 2oz size for mini cupcakes and the 4oz size for regular cupcakes.

Miriel, I've been thinking about trying these, but wonder if the rolled top edge makes it difficult to peel these away from the cupcake? What is your experience?

Muriel, thanks for the info and link. These are a little more sturdy too.
I take it you just place these on a cookie sheet to bake? Fill them just like the paper cups 3/4 full.

i have baked cupcakes in the fruit and nut cups and while they are very convenient, i do find it difficult to peel away the wrapper. For adults they usually manange by making a little tear to be able to peel the wrapper away. but i have foudn that they ususally dont work well for children.....

The 4oz cup is 2.5" on the bottom, 2.75" across on the top, 1 3/8" high.

After baking, I make 2 cuts on the top rolled edge. This makes it easier to peel it off when eating. The trick is to unroll the top edge and pull the pleats away. My friends have gotten used to it now.

Some people use spoons to eat my cupcakes. Others push the cupcake from the bottom, making it pop out of the cup. It is very different than the regular cupcake papers and takes some getting used to.

To bake with them, just line the paper cups on a cookie sheet. I fill them 1/2 to 2/3 full, depending on the cake batter, as I do not like domes on my cupcakes.

The 2oz cup is perfect for the mini cupcake inserts and the 4oz cup for the regular cupcake inserts from http://www.brpboxshop.com/cake_boxes.html

I wanted to use the 3.25 cups because they seem the perfect size for regular cupcakes but they move inside my cupcake inserts.
