I'm always looking for new authors to read. I like fiction and my favorites right now are:

Jodi Picoult (love, love, love her writing!)
Anita Shreve
James Patterson
Sandra Brown

Does anyone else have favorites to share?

My favorite right now is J.K. Rowling, I love Harry Potter.
I also like Anne Rice but only her older stuff like "The Vampire Lestat."
Jane Austin
Stephen King

I don't have too many favorites because I'll read just about anything once.

M. Night Shyamalan
W. Shakespeare
JRR Tolkien
Nietzsche
Frank Herbert
Terry Brooks

Do you like fantasy/mystical fiction? (Not the drippy stuff)

Terry Brooks' "Running With the Demon" was an interesting trilogy.
Its one of those good vs evil stories with a young girl (Nest Freemark) as the key character. She "sees" things others can't. Its more of a "good wins" scenario.

Me too! I remember hearing a librarian talking about reading outside of what you might think you would normally like. She was saying to use a 50 page rule. If after reading 50 pages into any book, you just aren't interested, you stop. However, often you wind up discovering a good book that you otherwise might not have read. Long before the movie came out I borrowed Memoirs of a Geisha thinking it would not make the cut after 50 pages. I ended up getting so engrossed that I finished it the same day. Of course, that was back when I had time to read a book in a day - lol.

Calla74, I was the same way about reading that book. I read it and loved it, but still haven't found time to watch the movie; I can't wait to see it, though.

Do any of you find that when they make a movie out of a book, and you read the book 1st, sometimes the movie doesn't quite live up to the book? For example, I loved the book The Runway Jury by John Grisham. I read it 3 times before the movie came out, even made my husband read it. When we finally saw the movie, it was good, but NO WHERE near how great the book was!!

I have the same trouble when I see the movies too. I don't know if it is because they don't have the time to fit all of it in the set period of time or if I just prefer what my imagination comes up with instead. It is probably a bit of both.

Reading is so important to me. My DH has always hated to read and school was difficult for him. I don't think my kids are spoiled but if they are, it is only because they have so many books. Other than because of content or money I can't find myself a good excuse not to buy them books. I have to stay away from Barnes & Noble and Amazon or we'd be broke!

You mentioned James Patterson. I love him. My favorite by him is "The Jester". Have your read that one?

I have read the Jester. I must admit I really didn't think I would like it but I wound up just as wrapped up in the story as his others! I didn't think I would like the one about the winged children either but I loved it. I have the follow up "Maximum Ride" but I haven't had a chance to read it yet!

Nicholas Sparks.. I love his books.. It's like I can see every move he talks about.. And V.C. Andrews.. My mom and I used to go to flea markets just to get all of her books.. There are so many books that relate to one another.. We once had the whole collection.. I got tired of " the already read books" collecting dust I gave them away. MAN! I want them back!!! I have my "all ready read" Nicholas Sparks books collecting dust icon_wink.gif
And if anyone knows me well.. I HATE DUST!!!!!!!

Huge James Patterson fan here.

I also enjoy Dan Thomas (reading Angels and Demons now)

Jennifer Weiner - did In Her Shoes which became a movie. Great chick lit. (Good in Bed, Goodnight Nobody, In her Shoes and Little Earthquakes)

Emily Giffin

Dean Koontz, although I haven't read anything of his in a long time. I used to read his stuff all the time in HS. I still have quite a few.

Toni Morrison

Anita Shreve (only read The Pilot's Wife)

Jane Austen,
Olive Burns,
John Krakauer
Haven Kimmel
John D. Fitzgerald

I guess I don't read a lot of fiction. I mostly check out cake books and the occasional self help or parenting book.

Janet Evanovich is awesome! You have to read her stephanie plum novels start with "One for the money" there are 13 in all I think, and she is still writing on this series. They are really funny books, with a little romance and mystery thrown in. very easy reads you can finish them in about two days if not one.

i am so with you on that! I can't walk into a bookstore without buying something and I could honestly spend DAYS just browsing the aisles. I love to read and find it's my sanity saver. Often, it's 11:00 at night before I get a chance to sit down and read a chapter or two (or ten if it's a really good book but I'm always sorry the next morning) but it makes me feel indulgent, as if I'm treating myself to something special. I have to say, though, that as much as I have a weakness for novels, I have an even GREATER weakness for kids books. As a former kindergarten teacher, I have tons of books for my boys but I still can't resist picking up new ones ALL THE TIME.

Oh! I forgot about Dan Brown (LOVED The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. I also liked Deception Point and the other one he wrote about computers but they weren't at the same level as the first two)

Also, Jennifer Weiner is great, too and I forgot Heather Graham.

Do read more Anita Shreve books. I just finished A Wedding in December and really enjoyed it. She has such a way with words and even when I don't agree with a lot of the choices her characters make, I find I'm still very intrigued by them.

For all of you who like fiction, I really recommend Jodi Picoult. She's my new favorite and she is so very good. She's one of those authors who, when I'm reading her work, make me want to pick up a pen and try my hand at writing. She just weaves such a tale so effortlessly! I loved everyone of her books (except Vanishing Acts was a bit hard to read) but my favorites were Second Glance, Salem Falls, and Songs of the Humpback Whale. I haven't read the latest (The Tenth Circle) but plan to soon. She takes controversial, real-life scenarios and creates characters with such internal struggles. Anyway, I highly recommend her!
