so here is the result of the making the caterpiller cake for my nephew Jonathan's 1st b-day. Miss Molly did help bake it (after ding-donging me to death every day w/ "can we make the cake now?") She even got to use the electric mixer all by herself!!! (no pics--Uncle doug hovering too much)
(it was cake by committee: mom picked flavors and cake board paper, Uncle Doug and Molly baked. Nana picked colors and ribbon, put BC on cakes, added the flowers and made/placed coconut grass. Uncle Doug covered cake boards, made MMF and covered cakes and added legs/antenna)
sorry no pic of doing the fondant...no time to stop and take!
but I will say this.
chocolate cake: 1 MMF: 10 -- who needs cake when you have MMF!
Jonathan stripped the MMF off the cake and just ate and ate it! sugar overload. finally he did dump the now uncovered cake into his lap and then not liking it there did his best to shove it into his mom's lap. by this point, he had chocolate head to toe!
--------
so here's the cake...
alternating balls of (staring w/ head which was smash cake) devils food w/ extender (chocolate fudge pudding) and butter recipe yellow w/ extender (white chocolate pudding). all are 1/2 sports balls.
side note: florida heat and humidty = ARGH!!!!! esp. when party is in 95+ weather outside in afternoon!
oh my gosh, that's so cute. What a good uncle you are! Can I send my brothers over for tips my kids sure could benifit from it. I love how you did the cake together for your nephews b-day. It must have been a lot of fun for her to finally get to help you.
That is so cute! I think your little apprentice is wonderful- and you guys did such a great job! You are a great Uncle!
How fun. My daughter loves to cook with me. You are a great uncle. Now she will be able to look at the pictures and say "I helped make that". What a treasure.
What a fantastic cake!!! I love all of the colors! What a great uncle you are!! Thanks for posting so soon after you got home, for all of us who were chomping at the bit to hear from Uncle Doug!!!
Very cute Doug! I'm sure that just made your niece's day...baking with you! Although...Jonathan's mom may not have been so happy with you...dealing with the sugar rush your MMF may have caused! I know I had one today...and I can only imagine if a one year old had one....whoooo---eeee! Reminds me of a kids show "See Spot Run" where the little boy (who normally doesn't get sugar) gets to eat all the junk food he wants and he went berzerk! It was TOOO funny...that's sort of what I can picture... Great job! I love her face..it looks awesome..on top of the fact that you were a kind and caring uncle to both kids!
Oh you make me so jealous. I love my nieces and newphews to bits and this is something I would like to do with them but would never get the opportunity. She is a very lucky girl to have a loving uncle like you.
And the cake looks lovely.
Welcome Back from vacation Doug.....C.C. did miss your daily input, encouragement, ideas, drawings, and the chuckels. But from your pictures we can see you were very busy creating family memories. Thanks for sharing your sweet little stories about Miss Molly and the pic's of the cake. You both get a BIG
That is adorable!! And best of all Miss Molly will have those memories her entire life!!
Welcome back, Doug! Missed your input and fun comments! The cake turned out great! Love the colors!! Congrats on such a great helper!
There's nothing like combining something you love with someone you love! The cake looks great!
Doug, welcome back!
Super duper job on the cake! The whole cake team did well!
I gotta tell you the joy I get when my nieces and nephews help/have helped bake or cook over the years. They just get so excited to pitch in and crack and egg or stir or cut up (with supervision) etc. If that's one solid memory that will stick with them forever, it's helping in the kitchen!
Awwww.....Miss Molly is adorable!! And your cake is so cute!!!
Welcome back! We missed you!
That turned out really good!
I'm making one for my son in September *crossing fingers* that it looks half as good!
