I want to start working on cake to sell, but I don't want to bake cakes just to practice on. What do I use for dummy cakes and how do I do it? Don't I use styrofoam? Do I cover the styrofoam with anything before I frost it? Can I apply fondant directly to the dummy cake?
Thanks for any help!

Use styrofoam dummies for cakes. I get mine from Dallas Foam. Here is the link to their store: http://www.dallas-foam.com/store/cakedummies.html
When you use fondant to cover the dummy, spritz water on the styrofoam and the fondant will stick to it.
Shipping is a little bit pricey but for me, it still works out cheaper than getting the dummies at a local cake decorating store.
Since I don't have a lot of money to sink into this project, can I use florist styrofoam(that you stick silk flowers into)? I was thinking I could wrap plastic wrap tightly around it before frosting it and then I could keep using it over and over. Would that work?

A very long time. I have some made back in 1998 and they still look good. Just keep dust off them.
In a pinch I've bought two styrofoam circles from the craft store and glued them together. It worked for me. I don't remember how much they were, but I do know that they were super cheap.
plastic wrap works good over the cake dummies so when you want to change your design, it comes right off......no soaking. If decorating in fondant, it will last as long as you want it to. I've had mine for 2 months now and still looks like the day I made it.
Tweetyweety,I use Press and Seal to cover my dummies. It protects them, its easy to apply and to remove.
