Long story short, I have a newer colonial home with railed front porch and all the landscaping is finished except, my DH didn't like the Japanese maple I put in the front middle of the porch/home. He wanted it to be smaller and more red in color icon_mad.gif So he moved it to the side yard. Water seems to puddle there after a rain. It has made it for second summer now. I'm afraid to move it back, and it has gotten about 8 feet tall, so might be too tall, but I can't find the right plant to put in the hole. It's been bare 2 summers and has a spot light shining on the hole. The biggest part of my plants are green and only flower during a season, so somthing with color would be nice. My porch sets up high so I want it to grow a bit taller than the rest of the plants. Any suggestions? I would post pic here but not sure if it's aloud or even how to in the forums

I can't think of anything that would meet all your specifications but I really like lilacs, they smell amazing and have beautiful red foliage in the fall. I also really like pink dogwoods (bloom in spring) and crape myrtles (these bloom in summer I think).

I like using Better Homes & Gardens website for gardening info. They have seperate sections for trees & shrubs. They also have garden plans with sample sketches so if you can find one similar to your layout it might provide some ideas.

Thanks so much! I won't admit it anywhere else, but in my sub everyone seems to be in landscaping competition. Until the "hole" I've pretty happy with ours. icon_biggrin.gif
