Wilton Fondant Gumpaste Class Questions............

Hi, we finally have the wilton gumpaste class offered here. I already have all kinds of supplies, including an older version gumpaste kit. Do you think I need alot of what is in the new kit or will I be ok with what I have, it is very very similar.
Also I was wondering if any of you used MMF for class or did you buy the lovely wilton fondant? I really dont want to have to buy that stuff. I thought I would just stick with what I usually do if I can.
The kit has a lot of fondant supplies so if you don't have those, and have a 40% off coupon, it may be cheaper to get it that way. If you do have a lot of the Wilton fondant cutting tools, you probably don't need the entire kit.
I used MMF to cover the cakes but Wilton fondant for the flowers and other decorations.
the kit contains:
round cut outs
leaf cut outs
heart cut outs
daisy cookie cutter
daisy cut outs
thin shaping foam
dusting pouch
20 flower stamens
ball and veining tool
fondant decorative punch set
fondant ribbon cutter/embosser
Yeah I loooked at that it looks like all I am missing is the punch set. Do you get a book like with all the other classes on the first night?
I have made flowers with the MMF, but I was wondering for what your are doing in class if that will work, and if you add any gumtex to it. That is usually what I do with the MMF, so it gets good and stiff.
I've always had to buy my book before. I haven't finished the class (actually I've only taken lesson one-we had a really inexperienced instructor ((read-she hadn't finished course 2 and the first time she had touched fondant was that night)) so I don't know about mmf.
The course outline is:
Lesson One:
Tinting Fondant
Marbleizing Fondant
Covering a cake board
Covering a cake (we watched her attempt to cover a dummy cake)
Lesson Two: Use a fondant gum paste blend
Draping
Hankerchief Style Overlay
Ribbon Garland
Carnation Base
Lesson Three:Use gumpaste
Daisy
Carnation
Carnation Calyx
Carnation Leaf
Fantasy Flower
Leaf
**my new instructor (the gal I had for 1-3 is also going to be teaching us the calla lily even though it's not listed in the book
lesson Four:
Fondant Favor Box
Fondant Cutouts-Overlays, Inlays
Fondant Borders-Ball, Embellished Rope, Punched Strip
I just finnished the class, we used mmf and worked just fine. it's all i plan to use in future.
Thanks, good to know, I just hate spending the money on the wilton, it is so awful, did you add gumtex to it?
Thanks buttercreamkisses for the run down of the 4 weeks, I love to have that ahead of time, know what to expect. So sorry to hear about your teacher, that is unbelievable. What were they thinking, Did it just drive you insane?? I would be asking for my money back ![]()
Joanns won't refund our money but the are allowing all of us to take the course again when the regular teacher comes back (in July). We all felt really bad for the girl-she was really young and inexperienced (she actually told us that she had never worked with fondant before).
Well at least they are being cool about it. You are nice to feel sorry for her. What the heck was she doing trying to teach it in the first place?
I wondered why she even took the position. It was a mess-we took it at Joanns and she kept telling us if we went to Hobby Lobby they'd be half price.
It was all I could do not to pry that dummy cake out of her hands as she tried to cover it in fondant. She tried about 6 times. She just kept adding more and more water to it and was making such a sticky mess.
OMG, that is just crazy! They will be lucky if anyone takes classes there again.
