I just came across a website that makes clear rubber stamps in 6 standard fonts and will also customize their stamps in any font you give them!!!
www.villageimpressions.com with one location in the US (Michigan) and one in Canada (Ontario), so no worries about duty charges if you are in North America!
This has to be the best idea I've come across for doing those "Lyrics" cakes and the "Happily Ever After..." wording around each tier of cake. Clear stamps would make that technique SO much easier!!
Here's an example of the cakes I mean. This one is from Carlos' Bakery:
Thanks for the link i'm saving it for future reference. That is such a beautiful cake. what a great idea!!
eek....i'd be very nervous to try this...may i ask how do you do that....
you stamp it, then just trace it with a writing tip? Wow...what's the best icing consistency for doing that.....i love the cakes, i think they are so beautiful...i'd be afraid i'd have "shakey" hands and make the icing ripple...
any tips...would love to try it!
Thanks for the link. I was just in AC Moore yesterday looking at all the different stamps in their scrapebooking section. I was wondering if they would work for cakes?
Thanks for the link Antonia, those look like HUGE stamps! Beautiful writing and seems so much easier to use.
Now, I was told by a naysayer that you have to be cautious because the stamps are not food save. Does anyone have opinions about this. This is such a great idea.
You can use non-toxic watercolor stamp pads. The kids stamp pads should fit the criteria.
I was told by someone who owns a company that gives classes in stamping on cookies that even the stamps have to be food save. I suspect that she may her own agenda. By the way where are you? It's 20 mins after midnight where I am.
after reading this thread, i contacted the lady out there...she said that people that are using the stamps simple to emboss are dusting with cornstarch to give a barrier between the icing and rubber....(which i believe would be a good idea anyway for easy release)
you can't put them in the dishwasher but wash them in the sink as in other dishes....she's going to investigate it further...i don't think you could even use diluted bleach, because that would deteriorate the rubber pretty quickly...so we'll have to wait and see.
i don't know about using the stamps to actually "stamp" colors onto it, but embossing fondant i think would be easier and less messy than buttercream. If you wanted to use it as an actually stamper, what about using gelcolors that were watered down just a bit...maybe mixing like with lusterdust and using alcohol for quick evaporation....of course the stamp would be pretty stained...i've only use stamps and cookie cutters (large and mini) for embossing...then embroidery paint on top of that..(boy does that need more practice!)
it would be nice for the cake decorating industry to get a hold of this so that something foodsafe could be invented...though it will probably cost $100...i am always amazed at how much impression mats are...sometimes $35 dollars or more...I hope there is more to that amount of money than just supply and demand!
i was at Michaels yesterday and purchased smaller plastic (same plastic) impression mats with cobblestone and other designs, and plan to use those...it was about 5 dollars for 3 mats. and i'll just dust them with cornstarch for embossing. But i compared it to the expensive mat i have and it sure seemed like the same plastic to me!

Alaska . . . I am a night owl (not by choice). . . poor daughter got my genes and has a real hard time falling asleep also!
I am a SU demo and as long as the stamps are cleaned first, you can easily stamp food items using watercolor stamp pads w/out fear of gettin sick.
Oh Yeah . . . it's 4:22am now
