Can I get an expert review? I think I want to buy one but I want to know that people are happy with theirs before I buy one. Is it worth it to get the different edges on fondant ribbons and such?

Are you talking about the little white plastic one with the different discs? I hate mine, I never use it. The edges aren't sharp enough to cut cleanly through the fondant.

I don't care for mine either. Unless you have a rock steady hand, they wobble all over the place and I never get straight edges.

I also use a pizza cutter.

It is not sharp and hard to use icon_sad.gif I recommend the FMM cutter shown here (not meant as plug for supplier, just for demonstration)
http://www.sugarcraft.com/
It is a good tool.

Here's another link to that FMM multi-ribbon cutter. I use this all the time: http://www.globalsugarart.com/catalog/product_17248_FMM__MultiRibbon_Cutter.html

The only disc I use with the Wilton cutter is the straight, no pattern one for cutting out the ribbon. Have never used the other discs at all.

hummm I just used it on the cake I posted for my DD's first birthday to do the bottom. I didn't understand how to use it at first, but I like it now. Call me crazy.

Yah, I dont think anyone uses it. Use a pizza cutter or a rotary cutter meant for quilting. As far as fancy designs you can do the same thing with scissors that have the deco edges, etc. Better control also.
Dont recommend ordering from Sugar craft. There was a thread on here about how their aweful to deal with and I personally didnt like their customer service or lack there of.

I don't think it's sharp enough to get a nice clean cut. It leaves ragged edges.

If you want it just to make an impression (don't press TOO hard), then it's fine for that.

Just finished taking the Wilton Fondant class, where of course you had to buy the kit that had this cutter in it. Let me tell you (from someone that has used it almost every other day for the last 4 weeks) it hardly works!
These ladies are right....use a pizza cutter!!!!! Don't invest in the fondant rollers....to repeat everyone else - they barely cut. I was so disappointed in them! So, I am stuck with a bag full of discs and a cutter.
Guess I need to find some use for them...get my wheels turning....

icon_rolleyes.gif Go buy the pizza cutter, it will work much better. (and that's just my opinion)

I agree, the Wilton one may not be the best cutter, but it will work much better if you coat the edges of the blades with a little shortening before you cut with it. You will get a cleaner cut and the fondant tends to stick less, also. I've used it before (comes with the fondant and gumpaste course kit) and I'll probably use it again.

I'm not familiar with the other cutter mentioned. But a pizza cutter works great for straight cuts, especially if paired with a stainless steel ruler.
