My 3 y.o. has repeatedly said that she wants a sunshine cake. She insn't able to provide too much detail, except that she also sometimes suggests sunglasses or a convertible. Help! any ideas for cute decorating? I want it to be cute, festive and somewhat sohpisticated (think polka dots or something), not too corny (e.g., no silly cartoon characters), and yet not adult either. The colors are lemon yellow, orange, and lime. Any ideas? I have no idea where to even start! I am thinking of doing 3 layers. If I did try to incorporate a convertible, how would I even go about it. Any or all tips big or small would be reallly appreciated. Also, any good "sunny" cake recipes! Thanks so much in advance!!!!!

Hi,
I made a sun cake with sunglasses on it last year. Got the idea from the Wilton yearbook. It's a bit of work to make the cookies sunrays and glasses but may be what you are looking for.

Hmmm -- how about making a cake that looks like a sun with sunglasses? You could do a big round -- and torte it. Use the other half to make triangle pieces to put around the sun. Hope this makes sense. Ice with either BC or fondant and bc or fondant sunglasses.

Would definitely incorporate the orange and yellow there -- the lime??? Maybe on the board you could use that color paper?

Hope this helps and good luck!

I did a search for sunshine, and this cake came up:

I think it is very cute, and maybe it is a starting point for what you want to create? Have fun!

You could make sure you have all your colors by coloring each layer a different color- lemon-yellow layer, orange-orange layer, lime-green layer. When the cake gets cut then all your colors will be exposed.

Heehee I'm picturing a sun (with sunglasses) driving a convertable!

Ok, cute, but not sure how you'd pull it off.

I second the different colored layers of cake - little kids love that stuff.

I love that! It is so cool. How did you make the cookies and sunglasses, did you just cut them free hand? Are they covered in fondant? What size cake is that? What tip did you do the icing in?

I was thinking of making a tiered cake, do you think a smaller version of that would look good as a top tier, or not really.
Thanks so much for the fab idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is such a cool idea. I wonder how I would go about doing it? I have a newborn too, so don't want to make 3 diff types of cake. I wonder how just making them diff colors with just food paste would work? Do you think that would be a good idea? Does putting paste or gel food coloring in the cake affects its flavor, I have never baked dye before. Thanks so much in advance!!!!!!!!!
Keep the good ideas coming!

You can just divide your white cake batter into 3 parts and dye each part a diff. color. You can only taste the dye if you use too much. You should need less than 1/2 tsp for each cup of batter.

How about a couple of tiers covered in lime green. You could do orange and yellow balls around the bottom borders. A stand up gumpaste sunshine on top with the sunglasses. Then you could add polka dots or fun smiley flowers around the sides. If you've got time on your hands a couple of cute little girls in fondant/gumpaste sitting with their legs dangling off the sideof the first tier would be fun. Am I thinking too big?

Hi "Brittanydear",
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.
Thanks for yours & "gailsgoodies" kind words.

Okay,

-the sun ray & sunglasses cookies are sugar cookies made by tracing & cutting the shape from a piece of paper onto the dough,

-They have an outside border (tip#35) in buttercream icing and then they are sprinkled with sugar crystals or sanding sugar.

- The cake itself is made from a sports ball pan

-I believe the tip was #18

- That is a great idea about putting it on the top tier, but, it would be hard to really get a good view of the sun as it faces up.

Best of luck...
