Hi!

I'm very new to this (started in March of this year after getting really bad cakes from the store icon_wink.gif ) and need a bit of help.

I'm going to be making a 3 layer 8" round cake for my sons 1st birthday. Do I need to dowel it? I might mention it will probably be hot that day. I'm just filling it with buttercream between the layers.

I did do a 9" x 13" double layer and definitely needed dowels but I'm not sure about this one.

Thank you!

I do not have nearly as much experience as most people on this site, but I do 3 layer, 9 inch rounds on a regular basis and have never used dowels. I level every cake so it doesn't tip to one side. I would suggest making the buttercream with all shortening. I do find it lasts better in the heat.

Good Luck icon_biggrin.gif

No, you don't have to use dowels for layers of cakes. It's when you do tiers of different sizes that you need to put cardboard between the tiers & dowels.
