Just wondering if it's possible to use impression mats ( I have diamonds and 3/4 in dots) on buttercream. Thanks!

An impression mat is a piece of plastic with a disign on it like triangles or little dots. You just push it into your iced cake and it leaves the design in the icing. I got mine from Earline's Cakes, and reaaly love it. I used it on the sides of my grad cake in my photos, then went back and placed gold beads in the seams.

Do you coat them with anything before you press them into the BC? Can you also use them on fondant? TIA.

You can use just about any crusting buttercream recipe with the impression mats, the key is to make sure its very crusted before you press the mat otherwise it will pull up the icing. It helps to do the viva trick first, then use the mat and that will give you a smooth clear impression.

So, it is not necessary to coat them?

I purchased some impression mats that you use for clay, they have various designs, the one I wanted was meant to look like castle brick, so you can also pick them up at Michael's or a craft store in the polymer clay aisle.

Someone else posted somwhere else...not to press the ends when you use the mat. AHving no idea what they meant..I, of course, did it! When you lay the mat on the cake and the edge is in the center or somewhere other than the edge...do not press down on the last row. Because you will get the last row of x's but you will also get a line the entire lenght of the mat. It took me forever to rub the line out of each individual diamond with Viva.

Also, I found my mat sticking in the buttercream (but I did rush the crust a bit) and i used a cornstarh/powdered sugar dust and then it worked fine. have a quilt mat in my photos..pink and black.

Good luck, Julia
