I wanted to thank everyone who helped me get my flamingos dried in time. I was worried for a while but I think it all turned out okay. The little girl loves pink flamingos and I wasn't sure what to do with this cake at first. I got so many ideas from everyone's cakes here. icon_lol.gif My husband was a real stinker when I was making this cake. He kept asking me if I was going to make a little person to go on the towel and I told him no. So then he asked if the flamingos were going to lay out, and how were they going to wear the flip flops cause they didn't have any feet. icon_confused.gif Talk about encouragment! Oh well!
I did have one more question for you all. I charged $26.00 for this cake. Do you think that was to low, to high, or just right. It is a fourth of sheet, one layer, with buttercream icing and fondant figures. What do you think?

I think your cake looks great! I would say you probably undercharged for the work you put into it. By the way, I'm from Kentucky too. What part are you from?

You definitely undercharged. I'd say double it. The worksmanship is impeccable and I'll best it tastes great, too. They totally got a HUGE bargain!

Thanks everyone! I am just starting out and I didn't want to start out to high. The problem is that most people think that you should charge what the local grocery store charges and that is all they want to pay. The lady that I made this cake for just called me and said they all loved it and she wants me to make another one in two weeks for her nephews. She wants a superhero theme, but here is the kicker. She said all the kids fought over the fondant figures so for the next cake there has to be at least thirteen fondant pieces on the cake, one for each child!!! All of this on a 1/4 of sheet? I have no clue what I am going to do yet, but I know I am going to charge more for so much fondant work. Thanks again everyone!

Oh sorry Net, I forgot to say that I am from the Northern Kentucky area, Crittenden, about twenty minutes south of Cincinatti. Where are you?

I would charge heavily for each fondant piece you create. It is CUSTOM art!!!!! And let her know your cakes are not the ordinary five and dime cheapies! Everyone I make cakes for know that I charge a fortune, but they know they are getting above standard creations and are willing to pay so they can thumb their nose at friends.

I love it!

Tell your husband the towel and flipflops are for the birthday girl, not the flamingos!

Nice work!

You did a great job, nice and smooth. I probably would have charged around $45 for it. I dont live near any kind of large city so my price is low compared to other areas.

Great job though!!!!

You did a wonderful job on your cake but undercharged. My cakes with fondant figures start at $50. You also need to tell her that each fondant figure will be $2 to $3 each. Figures that size take time and skill to do.

Girl, that is way too low! I charge $40.00 for a 9 x 13, and when I tell everyone my cakes start at $40, nobody has squawked yet. And $40 does NOT get you ANY fondant.

I am so impressed with how smooth the icing looks. Your cake looks great and I love the colors of the towel and flip flops. Your fondant work is great.

By the way, what method did you use to smooth your cake?

Thanks again for all of your nice comments! I ended up drying the flamingos in front of a fan. I was to worried about using any kind of heat. I had a very bad experiense with that once. I melted a dove that had given my a lot of problems and had taken me an hour to make.
I used the viva paper towel method. When I first started I couldn't smooth a cake to save my life even with the paper towels. I think it just takes a lot of practice and I have found icing consistency makes a big difference. Another thing I was doing in the beginning was when I smooth over with the paper towel I wasn't pressing hard enough. I guess I was afraid to put dents in it or something but now I press pretty hard and I can usually get all of the lines out. You should see my cake when I just go over it with just the spatula, it is a mess! Thank goodness for viva paper towels!!
I'll have to admit, this cake was really fun to make. I have all boys except for my baby girl and I have a lot of experience with boy themed cakes. I love doing girly cakes and can't wait for my little girl's first birthday!

Hi there...first of all...very nice flamingo cake...your icing is flawless and the decorations are very tasteful...not too much. I don't know about prices in your area, but I do know that here in New York, for some strange reason, people want things more when they are expensive!

I've had paying customers for not quite a year, yet, but until recently, I undercharged purposely. I needed to reel them in....
I don't advertise, but I think every single cake I have made produced me another one (or two). So, I think it's good to charge a little less in the beginning. If this is the same lady ordering the 2nd cake, charge her just a little more for the more fondant figures but tell her something like you're selling your first 30 cakes at a discount and that starting the new year, you will have your regular prices.
Consider low prices in the beginning as your "investment" to your future business. Good luck... icon_smile.gif

I love this cake !! - I'd like to do this for my husband (he's a flamingo fan) but I'm sure he'll take a flamingo out, lay him down on the towel, force the flip flops on and have him drinking the bottle. You should have seen what he did to my Beanie Babies tapedshut.gif

I think at least double the price would have been generous.
