How Can I Make A 3D Dragon Cake For My Son?
Decorating By tanyascakes Updated 13 Jun 2006 , 5:39am by tanyascakes
To anyone who might have an idea, I am wanting to make a 3D dragon for my son's birthday on Saturday. I have never tried this before and wouldn't except that my baby asked me to try. I have seen several on the site, but he has one favorite in particular. I tried pming the maker but never got a response. It was a cake made last year and they only ever had the one post. So now I am turning to you all for any help that I can get. I saw that she made it from a bundt cake cut in half(for the main body anyway). But after that I am at a loss. I figured to use the durable cake mix from this site. But do I need to fill the cake, then freeze to sculpt it? This is so over my head. But I am trying to make a great cake for one of my great kids, you know! Any help is greatly appreciated!!
TIA,
Tanya
Hi! I'm new here, but thought this might help you. I don't know if you want to go more elaborate, but I thought this didn't look too difficult. I found it in the gallery:

Good luck!
If you can get a hand on Debbie Brown's book Magical cakes I think there you'd find the instructions for this one:

I don't have the book so I don't know.
Post the link to the one your son likes so we could try to help.

I hope this will help you.

There's directions to make a 3d dragon.
or this:

This one is from another book, same author:

I think this is the one she means.

I know that freezing cakes does make sculpting much easier. I am not sure that she had to sculpt much, just cut bundt in half and place in the shape of the letter "S" and then shape a fondant head which you can then ice over in buttercream with fondant/gumpaste accents eg wings.
Good luck!
Sorry, I want to add this and then I hit enter. (LOL) It is a dragon built from a bunt cake.
Here are the instructions I use--nice and simple.

I used these too as a basis on the one I did too. I like having directions like that to know where to start, but it's also easy to make changes to fit what you want too.
Thanks so much for the info you huys! I was working so late that I didn't get back to this until just now. keira that is exactly the one he chose! I have the worst time trying to post things!!! Thanks for all of the wonderful directions! And Missy those directions seem perfect!! I am going to get to work on it soon! Thanks again.
