Pirate Ship Cake... The Picture Appears Now! Sorry!
Decorating By karennayak Updated 17 Jun 2006 , 3:22am by karennayak
Yesterday, I did this Pirate Ship Cake (picture attached) for a ten year old boy, who was having a pirate party at a beach resort.
I got a lot of help from Claudia(Claudine1976) who introduced me to the wonderful work of Marcella Capo, an amazing Argentian Cake Artist.
The pirate ship by Lou in the gallery was a great source of inspirationThank You Lou! I tried PMing you earlier. Hope you log in sometime and see this post.
The cake is Devils Food, with Fudge Icing, Buttercream and Marzipan modelled figures. All from scratch.
Thanks for looking,
Karen
Edited to try and get the picture to appear. Let's hope it works!
The photo didn't appear, but I went into your gallery and it's a great cake....the little boy must have loved it!
that is gorgeous!!! I ironically just got a request for a pirate themed cake...did not know if I'd do a ship or a chest, but that is inspiring me to try the ship! Great work!!
Thank You adven68, spottydog and ellepal, for your kind words. I get very few opportunities to make cakes here. I enjoy it thoroghly when I do get a chance to make a "different" cake.
Ellepal, I had made a treasure chest cake with my daughter (she was 5), a few years ago, which she loved. I'll put it up in my photos later this week.
Sorry about the photo not appearing earlier... I guess I was so eager to show my cake on cc, that I did something wrong.
Hope it is working now.
Karen
Awesome job! What great attention to detail. I would love to see your pirate chest!

Those sails are great Karen!!!
Will you share how you attached them to the "masts"???

I think your pirate cake is absolutely fantastic.
I also had a problem getting a picture to post. I kept getting a message that my picture was too large. How do reduce the size of a picture for posting?????
Very cute! I'll be adding a pirate ship cake to my portfolio next year too Will no doubt use cakes like yours for inspiration!
First,
Thank you all for your kind comments. I couldn't have done it without the help I got from this site and Pattrice from another Cake Site.
Cindww, I have attached a picture of the treasure chest to this post. Not a very good picture (pre-digital camera, six years ago!)
My girls(5 and 10) at the time wanted to help to ice it.
They kept saying things like ... Don't make the icing smooth, the chest is old cracked wood! The lock has to be broken Mama, the treasure is falling out! They had a great time icing it, filling it with all the candy.
Ihatefondant The sails are made of cotton cloth, which I soaked in water, and then just added streaks of brown colour at the edges (tried to make them look old and weather-beaten)
When they were dry, I folded a bit over at the top and at the bottom, to make a little tube. (stuck with 3m double-sided fabric tape) Then I pushed a wooden skewer through the tube to help them keep their shape.
For the masts, regular wooden dowels, painted with brown food colouring. Then, with a hot glue gun, I fixed the sails onto the mast one at a time, leaving them a little loose, so they look like they are blowing in the wind. Burnt my hands a couple of times too! I hope I have been able to explain what I did. If not, please PM me, and I will try again.
regymusic I use a program called Photoimpact, to edit photos for posting. If you like I can edit yours for you. You can also find some free photo-editing software available on the net. PM me, if you would like me to help.
Once again,
Thanks Everyone,
Karen
Thank you Tonenia, sarb21, jen1977, goodcakefairy, cindww.
For me, the greatest pleasure was looking at Daniel's shocked face when he saw the cake. For once, he was speechless!
And then he said, "Aunty Karen, this cake is the best gift you could have given me!"
Karen
Thank you, skylightsky.
I enjoyed doing this one.
Although it almost ended up as a disaster. I had the cake baked, doweled, sculpted and the base icing on, and decided to taste some of the pieces that I cut off... and it was a bit dry!
So, I started over. That really made a mess of my schedule, but it worked out well in the end. The second cake turned out really moist.
Anyway, my kids were very happy!!! Lots of extra cake to eat!
Karen
