I am planning on making a 3D figurine of a baby for a shower cake I am doing in a couple of weeks.
I will be travelling to the shower, then doing the cake so I want to do as much pre-work as possible.
If I make the figurine ahead of time, how long is safe for me to still be able to put it on the cake? I am planning on using MMF, but have only used it to cover cakes before. I don't know how long it's keepable.
Should I use gumpaste instead? Does it keep better?
Sorry, this is a newbie question.
Thanks in advance,
Sharon
it stays good for months~!!!! I've had some in a tightly sealed container for almost two months and nibble on it every now and then LOL it still tastes exactlly the same!!! I would go ahead and make the figure anytime now, you'll want it nice and firm by the shower anyhow , just be sure and keep it OUT of any type of sunlight or light in general or the colors will fade and get all crazy on you...blues will turn to shades of gray and purple reds to orange and pinks...they get all yucky!!
Hi,
I read where fondant users are sometimes combining gumpaste and fondant to create a 50/50 mix. I found it to be quite successful myself for items I want to become REALLY hard, such as figures, box tops, etc.
Hope that helps.
How long safe? Heavens, forever it seems.
before you store anything made of mmf make sure they are dried completely and away from moisture. Otherwise they soften up, lose shape and sorta melt.
gumpaste is more costly, but will LAST pretty much a lifetime if stored properly. You can now buy ready to use gumpaste at michaels if there is one in your area,
You can make it with either. The gumpaste will dry faster than the MMF. When you store it, though--yup, keep it out of direct sunlight and flourescent lights, but also do not store it in an airtight container--it will soften it back up. I usually put mine in a box to fit that is lined with thick foam--espcially if I am traveling--don't want those buggers flying all over the box and breaking. ![]()
