Oh my! Do ya' think they could be done in gumpaste? I wish I were so talented! Amazing!
you won't get that gorgeous translucence out of gumpaste... but if you've got that skill, I'm sure it could be done!
I can't imagine a person on earth who would eat it if it were out of gumpaste or fondant!!! That's insane work as far as I'm concerned. MelC you would know wouldn't you??? You make some pretty amazing fondant people yourself!!! Also....I didn't realize you had made a guitar cake when I had one to make....ended up getting tips from someone else...but judging from your cakes...probably could have used some good ideas from you as well!!!
Here are some sites that show sculpting babies from clay.
I sculpt with clay and I use these links all the time.

This link I use all the time when I make my tiny clay creatures for my water pond or Faery tree outside.

Just messing around with extra fondant/gumpaste I've sculpted babies before. I'ts not something I would do again out of gumpaste without charging a pretty penny. It took a while to get the hang of it since it wasn't clay. But with patients and practice, it's much easier then you think. It's time consuming. It is a little harder to work with then clay because the drying time is either too quick or too slow but the outcome is soooooo worth it. To get the sheen I've use sugar water and glazed the fondant baby before I painted the highlighted cheeks, toes, fingers etc.
I would recommend practicing with non air drying clay first, just to get the hang of it.
Ok this has been said before somewheere-This is "urban Legend" they are made from clay and not marzipan. I googled it once and it gives a link to the woman who made them.

Here's the link to the artist's actual site. She doesn't use marzipan as many sites claim. Still, here work is amazing!
Oops! Guess both sites are correct. She used to have a section that described the materials used. Trying to see if it's still there.
Yes, polymer clay for the little ones and silicon/vinyl for larger dolls.
