Does Anyone Really Like Fondant?

Hello, I am pretty new to cake decorating. I've taken the Wilton classes. You can make such beautiful cakes with fondant, but fondant is so gross that not even my kids like it. Do most people really eat the fondant or pull it off and eat the cake and buttercream underneath. So far, I've only used the Wilton and MMF. Just curious to know what others think of fondant.
I make my own fondant. I think Wilton fondant is the equivilent of canned frosting. The canned stuff is nasty but the homemade stuff is lovely. Same with fondant, IMHO. Wilton is naty, some of the more expensive commercially prepared kind is decent, but the homemade stuff can be VERY tasty.
I wont' even make a cake with fondant on it.
I won't make a cake without fondant on it. Wilton fondant is a joke. It's a shame because it's probably the first fondant anyone will ever try and it will discourage you from trying real fondant, like SatinIce which is lovely.
I have seen so many threads about how much people hate fondant...but my family and friends all seem to enjoy it. And you can't beat it for decorating purposes! ![]()
I agree with Adven68. I'm not nearly as talented, but I think that working with fondant opens up so many "doors" as far as what you can and can't do to a cake! Now, I make the MMF, and it is all I have ever tried. My parents didn't like it, but my boyfriend and I do. It's just a preference thing. (my grandmother and her friends love it on cookies....)
Give the MMF another try, and if you still don't like it, try some of the Satin Ice or other "ready made" fondants and see what you think. I just feel you are so limited with buttercream only, not that there aren't true artists who can do amazing things with Buttercream!
PS...Anyone know if Rolled ButterCream has the same consistancy/workability as MMF? I'd like to try it if it does.
I have to say that I prefer making fondant cakes. You can't beat its versatility when decorating. Not everyone is going to love it, but not everyone likes icing, either.
Wilton's fondant is a little scary. Try MMF or Satin Ice.

I like fondant, Satin Ice specifically. I love using it for decoration. I was shocked when I made a cake with fondant and people actually ate it. I used the dark chocolate flavor and it tastes (and smells) just like a tootsie roll to me. I dont love it, but I like it enough to eat it. The vanilla kind is ok too, but I'm not a vanilla person. ![]()
I like MMF because I can control the sweetness and flavor it as I like. I have also tried Satin Ice fondant. You can also add diff flavor to SI. If the fondant is on the cake overnight it will also pick up the flavor in the frosting. Most of my customers don't choose fondant because of the cost, but the ones that do choose it, eat it.
I wont' even make a cake with fondant on it.
Me, too. Part of the reason is that I don't care for the taste; I've not found one that is good enough to cover one of my cakes (yes, I know, I'm blowing my own horn here ... but I have it on good authority that my cakes are awesome!
)
The second reason is because of the cost. I find that it's less expensive for me to make a delicious buttercream than to ice in BC and then cover that with fondant.
Third, I'm just not comfortable with it. The last few times I tried fondant, it pulled and tore so badly that it just wasn't worth the fight. I can't in good conscience roll it to 1/4" thick, place it on a smoothly iced cake and watch it tear miserably. It seems so very heavy ... a decorated cake weighs enough without adding that much extra weight to it. Are we trying to see how many of us end up with ruined backs from carrying these huge, heavy confections for years????
And how do you keep the fondant from sagging once you get it on smoothly? I STILL haven't figured out how to master that one, and I'm not a dummy! ![]()
Please don't get me wrong. I truly admire those who can successfully work with the stuff. I tell my Brides that if they really want the fondant, there are plenty of good decorators who will do it for them, but it is not my specialty. If they want the clean look of fondant, though, it truly can be achieved in BC, provided the decorator wishes to take the time to get it that "perfect". It can be done!
So, having said all that, please don't throw eggs at me, everyone! I'm not knocking what you all do! I just believe that we don't all have the desire to make fondant-covered cakes. Some of us are tremendous artists and can make this stuff work, and some of us can't. We just have to play to our strengths. There's enough work out here for all of us. I'm happy to refer someone to a fondant decorator if that's what they really want ... eventually it will come back to me, either from the Client who had to be referred and remembered how nice I was about the referral, or from the fondant artist who finds herself with a Client who wants a non-fondant cake and will turn her over to me.
Okay, down off the soapbox now ... please, God, don't let me fall!
Happy Baking,
Odessa

I'm sure your cakes are delish....the great part about fondant is that it is so versatile...and if you don't want to eat it, you can peel it right off! To the OP... I really don't think anyone uses fondant to enhance the flavor of a cake.....just the looks. As far as the cost...people who want a cake to be a showpiece will usually pay for it. And....the best part is that it's so much fun to work with once you are comfortable with it. It takes a few tries, but you'll get it if you want to. ![]()
My family loves fondant!! (except DH - he doesn't want to "chew" his icing!!) I think if you use a great homemade fondant, or try out some pre-made ones, you might be surprised!! I agree, fondant isn't for everyone - but don't knock it until you try it - it can open up many decorating doors for ya!! If you decide you don't like it and prefer BC, then at least you can say you gave it a shot, right? That's what I did when I first started with fondant, and I love it now (I use a recipe given to me a few years ago, which is now posted on this site). Good luck on your new adventure!!
