I'm doing a cake for a 50th birthday party at my work. My co-workers are doing the party in black (What's so bad about 50?? I survived it just fine!) Anyway, I'll be using licorice for the sides but I though they would like black roses. Seems like a lot of black coloring. Any thoughts?

black roses on a white background would be so very elegent.

(after all -- the true black rose is still the holy grail of all rose breeders everywhere)

maybe you could start with a dark chocolate icing. Then you wouldnt need so much color.

Ooooh, I just thought of something. If I use chocolate bcf, I wouldn't have to put too much black in it would I? I think there is a tasteless black, just like the tasteless red color. That would work, wouldn't it?

I had great success making black from chocolate icing....and you don't have to add too much coloring. I used regular color paste from Wilton's and it tasted just like chocolate. Good luck!

You could also spray the white roses with the black color spray. It will make the edges black and the rest a gray shade. icon_smile.gif

Hace you seen COllette's "Black and White" in her Art of Cake Decorating book? instead of flowers on top she used a nice "bow" out of shoestring licorice!

But it is always fun to see grown ups walking around with black teeth from the icing!

Have you made fondant roses before? I would suggest making a sall batch of MMF and coloring it black before you add the sugar. Much quicker to color this way. Then just form up and allow to dry for a while.
