I went to Sam's today and, as usual, went over to look at the cakes, and I couldn't believe it! I saw four or five tall, rolling carts full of graduation cakes that were ordered by people! It made me wish I was doing this for a business. There's a lot around here to be had!

I know........I went there on Monday and saw the same thing.........birthday cakes, etc. tons of people picking up cakes....and others, asking to have things written on the one's that are premade in the fridge........makes me crazy...same thing around Mother's Day at Wal-Mart....people were paying 12.99 for a little heart shaped one layer cake.......maybe a 6"heart pan (foil none the less.....it was still in the pan too *ugh*) with maybe two roses and "happy mother's day" on them.......and they couldn't keep em' coming quick enough.......I thought ugh, those poor people getting those cheap nasty cakes!!!!!! Why oh why am I not in business LOL I do plan on trying to get a business going in the next year or so....need a ton of practice on techniques though....but I will do it if it kills me.....which it might LOL

Yes, I, too am disappointed to see all those people buying event cakes and wedding cakes from supermarkets and Sam's Club. I cannot compete with the local supermarkets, which are offering wedding cakes as low as $1.25 per serving in my area.

Yet, I am not as disappointed as those people who bought those discount store cakes will be when they cut into the cakes! There will be pre-made plastic decorations, with shell borders and a little writing on them, and no taste to them at all!

Fortunately, my family has more sense than to go anywhere else but to me for their event cakes.

Have you all seen the flowers that Walmart & Sams had on there cakes for Mothers day? It looked to me like the were made out of clay of something icon_confused.gif . You shouth have seen me looking at these flowers on the cakes I was about 1 inch from the cake looking at the flower going " what in the world is that made out of" I was doing this for about ten minutes. Then my mom said are you going to analyse (sp?) those cakes all night? I just laughed. I still don't know what they are made from. icon_cool.gif

I saw some @ Sam's club I wondered the same thing..........but then I saw a little sticker on the box that said....flowers are not edible for decorational purposes only!!! So who knows.....I thought they were gumpaste or pastillage and thought...oh no....don't tell me Sam's Club is gonna start that......(that's one of the few things you have to go to a decorator for anymore it seems) if they start doing gumpaste, and fondant, that'll kill of small decorating businesses.........bad enough they offer wedding cakes now!!

I saw them too. I'm wondering if they are the paper clay like the Wilton roses in the cake decorating section?

I think that is so funny that everyone analzyes the cakes. I do it too! Everytime I go to the story I always "swing by the bakery" to see what is in the case! icon_eek.gif I even have my kids and hubby commenting too! icon_lol.gif

KHalstead, Personally, I think the cakes at Sam's and BJ's and Costco are skimpy looking. They only offer a few designs and they seem to be monotonous. With all of the beautiful designs here on CC, I dont think anyone needs to worry about others going to those large discounts chains for gumpaste and fondant designs and such. We rock!

I am the biggest cake snooper when I am in those stores! I critique everything from the crookedness of the shells to the streaking of the colors! I am a madwoman!

I always have to swing by the bakery at my grocery store here too. I also have a bad habit of staring at the cakes forever to see what new thing they have and taking pix w/ my camera phone.

I work for Costco, and in our defense ( je je) our cakes against most of the chains (sam's for sure) are freshly baked, the fillings out of scratch and we strictly (I don't know how to spell that) make everything fresh, like if we do a cake todays, it's labeled today, I have worked in bakeries where they change the label constantly, and you don't even know when that cake was made for sure.

That's why I'm proud to work for them.

I love costco cakes. They are the best you can get (store bought) with cute decorations and at a really reasonable price. It is cheaper for me to buy a cake at costco than it is for me to make that same size cake at home. When one doesn't have time, energy, or money, I say thank GOD for costco cakes! icon_biggrin.gif

I saw these a while back. It says they are gumpaste. I could not believe my eyes. A cake for $15 with gumpaste flowers that were gorgeous??!! how are they able to do that?? And I think the reason it says non edible is b/c they have wires attaching them; so they have to label it as just a decoration. But it had a sticker saying gumpaste

I picked up the wedding cake brochure @ wal-mart (just to check out what they had) & the flowers are gumpaste. I was kinda bummed to see they were starting in on that part of decorating too

I have a friend who just opened a bridal show here in town...She tells everyone that comes in her shop to find someone to make their wedding cake homemade. She ordered a cake for a party at Hy-Vee and when she got it home it was still FROZEN!!!!! She was so mad.. She took it back too. So as long as we have people like her we can still stay in busniess..Happy Baking thumbs_up.gif

And thats what keep people coming to you for the Good Quality Fresh Cakes! I believe alot of people out ther think they bake the cakes to order at Wal Mart, Sams, Krogers where ever it maybe thats a Supermarket. Little do they know they probably all are from the same Warehouse and have been frozen for over months!

I work at Kroger and can say all of our cakes are frozen icon_sad.gif
Most times people just pick up the ones on the shelf and we write Happy Birthday or whatever on it and then they are on their way. We do custom cakes too, not just the kits either. I like it cause I can get alot of practice in with out spending my money. I just know that what I do for my own customers will be much better.

I am not allowed to say that I make cakes myself (tastes much better too) If I do then I could get fired and right now I need this job, (they are paying me too good not to work there)

I guess for some people "Ignorance is Bliss"
