If you are brushing both layers, then you need not make more than a 2 cup batch.

What I mean by a 2 cup batch is taken from the recipe:

2 cups distilled water (available in the supermarket or filtered at home)
2 cups granulated sugar

Bring to a boil, turn heat down, simmer about 5 minutes. Let cool completely before using.

If you want to add an extract or liqueur flavoring, reduce the amount of water by the amount of extract or liqueur you add.

Any extra you have can be refrigerated indefinitely.

You only need to brush it on the layers with a clean pastry brush.
