My daughter has an oral test in two weeks. the teacher asked them to either invent something or take something that exist and add a little extra, that doesn't exist already. Well my dd decided to make a cake, icon_confused.gif I wonder why? icon_lol.gif for the flavor it's ok she thought about doing a chocolate/pistachio/vanilla flavor (which I'm not sure it's already done but why not) but for the decorating part, it needs to be original, something never done. hugh!!!! Everything's been done!!!!!!!!!! Can you help me find something? It could be something that you do in another countries that's not really done in Canada. Afterwards she needs to make an advertisement for it!! Anything, I'll take any suggestion!!!!!! Someone suggested putting lights in the icing but I don't like kids playing something electric, especially in her class, there's some bad boys.....

thanks!!

Pinwheels on top and sides (hope it's breezy out) LOL the whole wind energy theme?? Or an everything cake, KInd of like the everything bagel? Try to make a few cakes all different flavors & filling ...cut them and put different pieces together to make a whole cake, (just try to mark the outsides for cutting or you could decorate each piece? Needless to say I will be obsessed with this thread today!! LOL icon_biggrin.gif Or a birthday cake with a little timer on top that dings at the exact time person was born? I know these are silly.....I'm cracking myself up! LOL

for lights, at a hobby shop get the super tiny (grain of wheat) size ones that run off a standard battery....of course remove before eating.

how about inventing a new decorating tool? and then showing how it works to make a design on a cake?

Two I'd like to see:

"The Cake Press" -- level your cake and get rid of the crumbs in one step.

"The Cake Vacuum" -- get rid of the crumbs and half of the calories in one easy step

and from the special effects dept.

get some of those little party poppers that when you pull the string shoot out confetti or streamers. bury one in the cake...the "confetti cake"

or...

big sunflower cake....little hose attached to a turkey baster/ear syringe filled w/ water runing to center of cake.... a gag flower cake that squirts you in the eye!

the automatic cake icer/smooter

some kind of stand that holds the cake centered on a turntable and then has two attachements:

1) holds the bag and evenly applies the iciing one the sides
2) holds one of those big drywall blades and smooths the icing evenly.

and if it could give sharp top edge so much the better

wow great ideas, icon_lol.gif

I love the confetti cake idea!!! I'll ask dd if it works for her, keep the ideas coming, I'll give her all the choices and then she can make her OWN decision.

I would love that "takes half the calories" thing, wish it was true, sigh!!!!

icon_wink.gif well doug was on a roll..i'm new at this-but i really love the idea of an everything cake-5 or 10 cakes in one sound original to me and alot of work-teacher would have to be impressed-advertise as a cake icon_rolleyes.gif flavors from around the world-from different countries (each slice has a different country theme/flavor-you can still use the idea of -mini pinwheels & tulips from holland, cake flavor??;do mexican theme, choc/cinn. cake just add a total different filling than normal;take america's apple pie and cherry pie turn it into a cake flavor-gross;you're from canada, put that in the cake theme also----now who's on a roll--if the cake was big enough you could actually have items sticking out---i'm like spottydog i'll go crazy all day--oh yeah you could do country flavor & specific theme-i mean for instants-america's flavor w/marti gras theme, repeat for each country??i would love know what you and your daughter decide and see the final.OH AND DOUG--SO WOULD I-THE CAKE VACUUM-FOR SURE>>>HA HA icon_lol.gif

I love that idea of many different cakes in one!!! that'll be fun, anyone has other flavor ideas for that everything cake?? My dd will be so happy!!! When I told her that I was asking people at CC she laughed never thought it would work. Told her never underestimated the power of CC!!! icon_lol.gif

thanks again and keep the ideas coming, I love this, never thought her "make a different/nevermade up cake" idea would've been so exiting!!

You could place a small battery (not too much a bad boy could do with that esp. if it is part of the tray) in the tray and wire the cake to light a light bulb, you don't see too many wired cakes or just cakes with wires. (you dont have to put the wires in the cake you could make a stand above or to the side of it and just make some sugar fake wires) It could be some other small science fair like set up. You just dont see, well I dont, many science like cakes.

Dh said do a shawdow box cake.... icon_confused.gif
He said yeah you know shadow boxes are popular and kids make them for school all the time but has anyone ever made one of CAKE??? lol
She could use fondant and makes some theme inside like educational or even maybe a nature scene like sea creatures or whatever.
Not really sure how the light could be attached behind it but it would be a challange and actually pretty cool. I just couldn't see it at first but then as he explained it I was like yeah that would be interesting IF You could make it... Just an idea

Okay, here's my thoughts. This has been a very interesting thread to watch! icon_smile.gif

How about a cake cover that is decorated to look like a cake so that you can have your cake and eat it too? icon_razz.gif Maybe take a casserole dish large enough to cover an 8" round cake, and paper mache over it. Get it nice and smooth, and then ice that with plaster of paris. Paint it pretty and spray a nice clear coat on it. Hmmm... I think I've just talked myself in to trying this! icon_lol.gif

you could make a globe cake; put it on something that would make it spin like a real globe; globes have been made; but I haven't seen one spin yet

She hasn't decided yet. I've just printed out the whole thread, so we can focus on the ideas and decide. Of course she's thrilled by the confetti idea: I think there's something that attracts kids with stuff that makes messes... icon_confused.gif not sure the teacher would appreciate but sure would the kids icon_lol.gif

As soon as her mind is set on something you'll all know!!! I love the globe thing, and the waterfall. Anyone knows how to make the coolest waterfall, that would actually work , like a volcano??

thanks so much, there's a lot of imagination around here!!!

Well one way to do it would be to make a hollow center and put in a tube; then put attached to the top of it; a flower former the size you want. put in the tube some baking soda; have a bottle of vinegar ready with blue food coloring. When ready; pour in just like a volcano project; Just came to me that baking soda and vinegar are foods; so no chemicals to worry about. just don't want it to get on the cake; so it tastes yummy still.

He comes up with the coolest ideas and best drawings... I bet he could figure out how to help make a cake flow with water or lava...lol Might shoot him a PM... thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif Can't wait to see what she is going to do... Of course you know when the teacher asks how did you come up with this awesome idea she'll have to say," Well my crazy CC aunties and uncles..lol Just an extended internet family..HAHAHA."

Ok finally she made her choice, or should I say, she came up with an idea!! She's going to make a "russian doll"-like cake. She wants to use my Betty Crocker dome pan, cover the cakes (both the dome and the inside round) with fondant, so it won't stick together, to make a surprise double cake. Saying in her "ad" that when you make a chocolate-pistachio cake and some guests won't like it, Surprise there's a vanilla cake inside!!! So A cake is good but two is better! that's her slogan. She really liked the confetti cake idea, but couldn't find anything here in town, and as for the waterfall cake, she told me: "That's already been done" icon_confused.gif what??? where have she seen that? Does she knows another cake decorator I don't know?? icon_lol.gif Well at least she has her idea. And she really loves CC!! she's now asking to go check the forum with me. She says that when she grows up she'll help me out! that's nice!!!
So next weekend she'll bake, bake, bake!!! I told her she has to do it herself, I'm not the one that's going to get the grades. She can't wait. I'll teach her how to bake a cake, make MMF fondant and so on... I'll post a pic as soon as we're finished!! thanks again everyone!!! really appreciate the help, and lots of those ideas will probably get done one day for sure. I would like to try that everything cake. Made me hungry just thinking about all the flavors that could go in there.....

thanks!!!

Lorris and Arianne!

I'm afraid your dd is right about the waterfall cake. There's one posted here on CC by waterfallsoygurl . It's a wedding cake. Your dd's idea is terrific though. I hope she can make it work. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

She could also make a "cookie box" to transport it in, for those guests who don't like cake. Line the outside of a square pan with foil, beginning at the bottom edge (which is actually the top of the inverted pan), line 2 in. cut-out cookies slightly overlapping each other working your way to the flat bottom of the pan. Cover completely. Bake according to recipe. Looking forward to the pics. Happy instructing and baking.

Great ideas. Wow. I hope my daughter doesn't do anymore cake projects! LOL. But if she does, I'll know where to come for for advice. I though the "cell cake" she wanted to do was enough work. She got an A+ for it too (the teacher had NEVER seen such an elaborate cell cake).
