Like Discolady said, it really helps to crumb coat. When I am in a hurry sometimes I will use the big cake icer tip and then I don't crumb coat it. Have to be alittle careful but it usually works.

only if you need to. i never ever crumb coat. don't need to so it wastes time. but if you need to then definately or just freeze the cake for about 30 minutes and you shouldn't get any crumbs in your icing
