Help. My letters or piping on the side of a cake doesnt stick all the time or falls off. Do I need more piping?

Is the cake sitting a long time before you "finish" it? I am guessing you are talking about buttercream.... If it is maybe it is crusting before you get to it. Maybe that your icing is to stiff also. HTH
