I was just wondering if any has an extreme fear or probia of anything?
I feel so stupid about my fear and at times it is so embarrassing. And very hard to get help. I am 21 and i have Brontophobia- a fear of thunder and lightening. I cry, pass out, throw up, freeze, now matter where i am as soon as i see that flash!! If it is raining i go and sit in my car (the safest place to be in a storm) until it stops. I sleep every night with ear plugs and my eyes covered. My fear is making my life really hard. So does any one else have one!!! Or am i just mad.

I could never hang out with you, I have emetophobia - fear of vomit. I would constantly be afraid there would be a storm, and you would throw up. Mine is pretty disruptive, too, especially with a seven year old who gets indigestion. We went to the doctor a couple of months ago because DD had a really bad cough, and the doc asked her if she ever threw up because of it. She told the doctor no, and that I run away if she ever does. I told her that I do not, (though I desperately want to). DD responded with, "Well, EMOTIONALLY you run away. I had to give her that one.

I also have to have most movies screened for me. Sadly, I will never return to the best cake shop in the area, because it's surrounded by bars, and last time I went, some drunk guy barfed in the parking lot.

On the plus side, my fear has caused me to never get drunk!

Mine is spiders. A pretty common one, but it's getting to the point where it's controlling my life. If I put on a pair of shoes out of a closet, my hubby has to do a 'spider check' first. If we're walking anywhere, park, trail, etc. I can't walk first in case I walk into a web. If I see one in my house, car, at work, etc. I freeze, panic, cry. Everytime I walk in a room, I do a quick scan to see if i can see any. Sitting outside on a lawn chair is near torture. My hubby said he never realized how many spiders there Actually were around here. I'd love to know how to 'get over' these phobias. Any suggestions????

I'm terribly afraid of spiders, there was a commercial running a few months ago and it was horrible.
My kids have to keep their toy spiders away from me.
I have to close my eyes or leave the room during scenes with spiders so I won't watch CHarlotte's Web.

I don't have a problem reading about spiders so long as there is no picture.

The big problem is that I can't read some stuff to my kids, I recently bought my youngest a book about poisonus animals and had to make his big brother read it to him. icon_redface.gif

I am probably going to remain this way as old as I am, unless i decide to go on "Maury" to get rid of it. NOT!! that's not happening, LOL. icon_smile.gif

Creepy bugs like ticks. My husband was in the woods and brought some home.......I have the hebegebeess <-sp (keep in mind that I am almost 30 and never had one stuck on me...well I found two this morning and about fainted! Along with the mega legger in the shower.

We have ticks in the yard but I like to imagine they really do not exist!

Its spiders for me for sure, but I have to say I'm relieved to see that my phobia isn't as bad as some others - at least I'm ok seeing them on tv or toys or whatever. icon_smile.gif

Get this though, there is a spider INSIDE our rear projection tv. Theres no way we can get him out and he always crawls on people's faces! If you get up close he looks all pixellated... its very weird! I wonder how long they can live without food... and I hope it doesn't die against the screen!

I do also have quite an aversion to having my kneecaps touched...

My sister has a phobia about sticky things, she would freak out if my DS put stickers on the wall and she won't wear band-aids.

My FI has a phobia about... get this... people with red hair. He gets nervous and queasy and says he twitches (but I have never seen that).

My big fear is the water. Especially the Ocean. Since I live in the midwest, I am safe. I will never take a cruise, unless it was docked ( If you are next to land you have a chance of survival ). If I get in the ocean or river, I am a nervous wreck. I hate Titanic only because of Jack sinking in the water. Even Happy Feet made me quite nervous at the theatre with the chase scenes. I think it is a control issue and you can't see what is coming. My joke is "I can't even swim as fast as a guppy. It can't be safe."

Then on vacation when the sharks were spotted when my DH was in the water. Lesson learned. If Pelicans are diving too close to you, get out. I guess they feed when the sharks scare the fish away. So, the beach is a great place for me to sit and watch.

When I was little, I was even a little afraid of the tub drain. What a goof!

Good Luck working on your phobias. I think mine will last a lifetime.

Mice or rats, terrify me! And if I ever see one I swear I can feel them crawling on me for hours later.
Clowns! Kramer from Seinfield and I share that one. They just freak me out, they are creepy. And that has been long before I read Stephen Kings "It" after that I could not walk over a rain grate because I always thought of Pennywise.

Crickets, because they jump and you never know which direction they will land, if one ever got on me they would have to call the Twinkie Mobile and haul me off to the funny farm.

snakes and spiders dont bother me at all, I can relate alittle bit to you moydear77 with electricity, I think its the whole lightening thing for me. An electric shock from static makes me feel sick. I cant cope with blood tests either.
Iheart cakes in england we have a program called Panic room and you guest it they put you in a room with your fear and help you get over it. I applied to go on it but im affraid that lightening cant be put in a room. I do think facing your fear is the best why to over come it. About a year of so ago my liver shut down and i was in hospital for 2 months. I had to have 2 blood tests a day, when i 1st got there i was crying, being sick, fainting by the end of my stay i was holding my arm out and not even thinking about it!! two weeks after that i had to go back for another blood test and i was crying and i fainted. so it started all over!!

Okay, I was phobified of snakes until the last 4 years or so. I inherited the fear from my mom, who inherited it from her mom...and I decided it needed to stop with me (I just had had my first child). So I started looking at snakes in books until I could do it w/out jumping and running, then watching them on TV until I could w/o scrambling for the remote. I can now even see them behind glass (at the zoo) etc. w/o going too nuts. I still don't like snakes, and would rather live the remainder of my life w/o running into a live one, but I'm now convinced that most of it was in my head and I just needed to recondition my mind! Try it...but don't look for it to happen overnight...I still have my "snake dreams" uh, more like nightmares, but not as often!

Seriously, though, if a fear is truly controlling your life, please seek some professional help...no need to live another day in bondage.

I have a fear of falling. Even short distances scare me. The other night my sister needed my help getting stuff down from the attic. When I was standing on the ladder it moved ever so slightly. I was paralized and couldnt go up any farther and had to calm my self before I could go down. Got my sister to do it while i held the ladder.

I am also afraid of injections but not blood tests. Strange I know....

Most of these fears seem so perfectly rational to me . . . I have completely irrational ones!

Keep in mind I have serious issues with OCD . . . I eat in a pattern, chew evenly on each side, take even number bites, can't have food touch, etc. If anything happens that I can't eat in a way that I am comfortable with . . . well, I FREAK OUT! (Maybe I have a fear of odd numbers? icon_lol.gif )

I also have a complete and total breakdown if I am swimming in a pool alone. I grew up swimming competitively since I was a little kid . . . and I can't be the first one in or the last one out of the pool. When I was little I used to have this stupid imaginary thing about invisible sharks in the pool and they would only eat me if I was alone in the water . . . but now I just freak out for no reason.

I can't stand puppets or dolls, particularly marionettes. The way their chins giggle, etc . . . ITS NOT OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few years ago we were at the movies and a preview for that Team America movie came on . . . my poor boyfriend had to carry me out of the theater because I was crying so hard from just seeing the first few clips before I closed my eyes. Lets hope I never have daughters who want to play with dolls!

I think one night we counted about 15 seriously stupid fears that I have, but yet I can't control them.

At least it gives my boyfriend something to make fun of me for!

Wow! I thought I was the only one who felt that way about cottonballs, add cornstarch and velvet to that. The cornstarch has that same "squeak" sound or feel to it as cottonballs and I get goosebumps, same with rubbing or feeling velvet fabric.

I have a fear of any arachnids. Living in the desert that includes scorpions. When my son was a newborn we began seeing baby scorpions all over the apartment. This went on for a couple of weeks and my husband was out at Walmart at around midnight (remember, we kept newborn hours lol); and I was walking out of the bedroom comforting our son when I saw the momma scorpion crawling up the wall. I grabbed my cell phone and froze in place, clutching my son. I called my husband and told him to get his behind home now because I can't go near that thing. I was shaking and crying and so afraid to lose sight of it and not know where it went. Thankfully it only moved a few inches in that 15 minutes and my husband, who thought I was exaggerating it's ugliness and size even freaked out a bit when he got home. He tried to hit it and it fell to the floor and made a sound and started scurry-ing....and UGHH they are just FREAKY!!!

I used to have a fear of odd numbers, and one-sided things, sort of like an OCD, but it included not using negative words as well. It was really quite debilitating and I had my own cleansing ritual for it (it was almost like a form of my own made up superstition - wierd). It started in Elementary school and went on until I was 27, when I just one day up and got over it. I only confided in two people my entire life about it, but the things I'd do to "cleanse" myself became obvious if you knew me well. I still don't like negative words, but I can deal with them a lot better. OK, now you guys know how wierd I once was!

I hate movies with zombies--even comedies with them--freaks me out. My DH laughs about it saying how a grown woman with very little fear is afraid of something that will never happen.

I also don't like some clown and those porcelin (sp?) dolls. My mom use give me a collectors doll every year when I was younger and we would put them in a glass case. I never told her that I would run upstairs in the dark afraid they would jump out to get me. Funny thing is many years later I saw my older brother doing the same thing!

ok, my fear is similar to an earlier mentioned fear. its vomiting. i have vomited only once since i was 9 years old. i REFUSE to vomit. and if anyone around me vomits, i am a basketcase. i can't hear it. see it. smell it.

this leads to another fear i have which is of flying in a plane... not so much the 'flying' aspect but the 'being trapped in a plane with a bunch of random people (who could be sick at anytime)' aspect is what gets me.

I hate having my arms pinned to my side, like when someone gives you a bear hug, especially when I don't see it coming. It all stems from when I was little (2 yrs old), and had to get my stomach pumped. They put me in this plastic restraint and all I could move was my feet, I couldn't move my arms and I totally lost it. Don't ever want it to happen, but I would rather lose my legs than my arms; I know I would go absolutely insane if I didn't have them.
Oh, and as some of you know from a previous thread of mine, I'm not all that fond of mice, either.

I hate clowns, too, but I wouldn't say they're a phobia. I saw Poltergeist when I was 8, and I've been afraid of them ever since. Clowns kill people.

Along the same lines - people dressed up as animals. That's a pretty recent one, though. There's an episode of CSI about plushies & furries & it completely freaked me out. I won't even let DD sit on the Easter Bunny's lap anymore. Of course, it didn't help that the episode was filled with barfing, which is my true phobia.

I hate planes for that very reason! I'm horrid, but I sneak my ipod at takeoff & landing, too, because that's when I imagine is the most barf-prone time. I absolutely refuse to take a cruise, also because of stomach ailments being so common.

Check out http://www.emetophobia.org/ I didn't have much time to look at it, I just found it this morning. It made me feel so much better, though, knowing there are others out there. icon_smile.gif

PS www.screenit.com has vomiting listed under blood/gore in movies if it bothers you that way, too.

I have several small fears in life ... but my biggest fear in life is ... SNAKES ... I can't stand seeing them, hearing them, being near them ... ugh!! I have it so bad that I have nightmares usually once a week that includes waking up in a loud shrilling scream that wakes up the entire household and I make my husband take off all the covers on the bed to ensure there are no snakes there ... then its a trip through the house with a flashlight just to make sure they did not slither out to the other areas and a quick flush of the toilets just in case they were in the drain lines ... its so bad .. when my husband goes into fish stores he has to do a walk-a-bout to see if there are any reptiles, namely snakes or anything else that may look like them ... its a horrible feeling and I don't think I could ever do one of those get over your fear shows because I can't even be in the same building that houses snakes!!

Some of my fears have been mentioned.
Clowns: These things are evil people!
Water: Almost drowned twice. Once in a river, once in the ocean.
Being closed in, mainly elevators. I will walk as many flights of stairs as it takes to get to where I'm going. I really can't stand anyone or thing near my face.
I also need things in even numbers, I count ALOT. I have to verbally out loud tell my self to stop!
Fire: This is probably due to the fact that I sat our house on fire when I was ten. icon_eek.gif
I'm sure there are more.

fear of the monster under my bed (real fear)
open closet doors in the dark
taking a shower with nobody home in fear a killer will stab me
fear of vomiting...somebody vomits I vomit, I sweat I cry and I become a wreck....DH always takes care of the vomiting kids (believe it or not THEY NEVER vomit when DH is at work)
fear of not getting somewhere in time...always leave 30 min. early no matter where I am going...Scared someone will get the last gallon of milk I guess
Fear of crunchy bugs..you know...all the bugs that make a crunch when you step on them.
Fear escalators
(but I LOVE thrill rides go figure)

KatieTaylor77, I feel your pain...my youngest son has OCD icon_cry.gif

SNAKES!!! I can't stand them. In the summer I never leave my car windows down...have a fear of driving down the road and one crawling from under my seat and wrapping itself around my neck. My grandmother would kill a snake and then chase us with it when we were childrenicon_cry.gif

NEEDLES!!! I have one little tiny vein in my left arm that they can get blood from....I blow I.V.s left and right.

MICE!!! I can set a trap but can't empty it. My nose is very sensitive to dead mice smells and it makes me sick stomach. I do not use poison for fear of them going somewhere to die and then smell...only use traps.
