Buttercream Ribbon Roses

How do you make buttercream ribbon roses? Do you use a nail? Are they hard to make? I am not good at regular roses. What tip makes a good rosette rose? I"d like large rosettes. Thanks for your help.

this is the closest I've ssen to a buttercream ribbon rose:

I am not coordinated enough to hold the nail w/ one hand and pipe w/ the other so i usually make them on the cake or just on waxed paper on the table.
