I've heard that it's about 2 mixes, but I have to make it tonight and I'm a little worried that 2 mixes won't be enough. Need to know so I can send my husband to the store on his way home if need be!
TIA!
Thank you! I thought 2 sounded a little low, because I use 2 for a nice thick 9x13, and I don't want to end up with an inch thick cake!!!
I would say 3 mixes per 12x18x2, if you're not extending or doctoring them.
Here's a handy chart (uses DH mixes):

(ozzynjojo's post)
If you use the doctored White Almond Sour Cream cake recipe - 2 boxes would be enough:

If you look in the pan their are two lines, one for a single layer cake or a double layer.
Single layer - two cake mixes.
double layer - four cake mixes
Hmm...I'll have to look in mine for those lines. I never noticed that before.
But I just wanted to give a second vote for what justsweet just said! That is how I do it.

Weird, my pan has no lines!

Huh???? Isn't a "double layer" made up of two cakes with filling in between?
Oh oops - for one solid sheet cake (no torting or layers), I use 3 mixes.
But if I am going to layer it, I use 2 mixes per layer to make 2 thinner layers. I would rather bake twice than have to torte something that large.

Maybe it the brand that I have, it is not a wilton brand. I bought it a few years ago. Their are 12 x 18 x 2 or 12x18x3. I will see when I get home what the height it.
Ok, look at my pan. I was wrong it is a wilton professional pan
12x18x3 and their is a line for the cake mix. The line is for a double layer.
I just took one out of the oven. I used 2 mixes with an extender. It rose all the way to the top of a 12x18x2.
