OK- so I've asked a bazillion questions today -hopefully this will be my last. Is it possible to put shimmer dust onto royal icing? can I brush it on mixed with vodka/lemon extract? or can I brush the hardened royal icing with a little water and sprinkle the shimmer dust on it? Will it break down the royal icing to put water on it?

thanks as always-

You can use it on royal icing, just make sure it is completely dry! Thry and use as little liquid as possible, so you dont break down the royal icing! Good Luck!

Yes - you can put shimmer dust on by using the lemon extract or vodka. Water will break down the icing. Lemon extract or vodka dries VERY quickly so it won't affect your icing. Depending on the effect your looking for - I've also read posts in here that you can "steam" the dust on. You run your item QUICKLY through steam and then you can put the dust on. I've never personally tried it but the theory sounds good. thumbs_up.gif

thanks guys- one more question (I swear icon_wink.gif last one!) Is using the lemon extract the only extract you can use or is it just b/c it's clear? Can I use clear vanilla or almond or is there something in the lemon extract?

thanks -

OK- I lied - here's another thought - can you sprinkle the shimmer dust right onto the royal icing before it dries- would that work?

You would use lemon extract because of the high alcohol content (dries quickly). Vanilla or almond would not work as well....

Are you talking about Wilton's Shimmer Dust? If so you do not want to mix it with anything. It's not the same them as luster dusts. It is course in grain.

You can lightly brush where you want it to go with water and sprinkle it on. You can also sprinkle it on while your royal is still wet, before it starts to dry.

Thank you TexasSugar - now that you mentioned it I think that's what it is the Shimmer Dust - not the Luster Dust- so I will try to just sprinkle it on while it's still wet - well that saves a lot of headaches- I could just see me now trying to mix that stuff with extract! What a mess! Thanks for clearing that up for me!

I just dry brush it on if i want a very subtle effect or I sprinkle it on while the icing is still wet if I want a stronger effect
