I'm making a cake for a diesel truck club my husband is in & I want to have smoke stacks with smoke coming out of them on the cake. I know I'm going to make the stacks out of Rice Krispie treat, but the problem is what do I make the smoke out of????? I was thinking of trying cotton candy & seeing if I could spray it black with that Wilton spray color, but I think it will just disolve icon_biggrin.gif If anyone as any suggestions I would appreciate it.

I'm not sure if it will dissolve the cotton candy or not, but the cotton candy idea was what I was thinking of. Perhaps if you hold the can far enough away so that it's just misting it, it won't dissolve. The other option (assuming you are making your own cotton candy) is to color the sugar first. I don't remember how to do it, but there is a way to color your own sugar instead of always buying the more expensive specialty cotton candy sugar. You can also use Kool-aid crystals I think, but I'd check on that to make sure.

When using the Wilton spray mists, be sure it's at least 8 inches away from anything you want to spray -- that stuff has a way of spurting and leaving big glops of color (even if you start spraying on a paper towel and move to whatever you want to spray.)

What about brushing black powdered food color or petal dust onto the cotton candy with a soft paintbrush?

I don't know if it would work, but it might be worth a try. icon_smile.gif

What if you used the blue cotton candy. Or Melt grape hard candy and string it over something to get a sugar string puff it would be "airy" (holey) and dark

I've used Wilton spray on cotton candy before.....AND, by accident! I was using the spray for something else and my daughter walked into the kitchen with cotton candy and I jokingly sprayed toward her and it hit her candy! It did just fine! I would hold it at least 6-8" away from it!

Also, I have heard other use popcorn (or that puffcorn snack) for smoke and you could spray that as well! I think either would work great!

I would just have white cotton candy if you want it edible

but if not I did see someone use cotton balls you could spray that with no problem

I used cotton candy for my Haunted House cake. The cotton candy that made contact with the buttercream disentigrated. Practice with some to see how long it will last (stay upright).

What about "tendrils" out of fondant or gumpaste and you could attach them with RI. Does this make sense? Kind of like a tiny, curvy, dried stick of fondant or gumpaste (several of them) and stick them into the "stack".

You carve a hole into the stack and place something into it and a small piece of dry ice

If using Dry ice, you have to put a plastic (glass/ceramic/etc. will shatter) container down into the cake to hold the dry ice. Dry ice, however won't give you the "black" smoke that diesels make; it's more light grey.

don't know if this will be what you are looking for but in my photos there is a cuppa coffee with steam, they are made out of fondant.. shaped the night before and laid flat on my countertop and left in the open air overnight, I stuck a toothpick in the bottom of them before they hardened so I could put it in the cake.... maybe that will help?

I've got a couple of tendrils of fondant smoke coming out of the cigar & martini cake in my photos. Painted with silver luster.

Thanks marthajo1! Yeah I made it but no Smoke icon_sad.gif I tried a bunch of different things and was not happy with how they turned out. I still have to put up a photo of it though. I ended up doing a set of tire marks going through it with a chocolate transfer of the logo on top of it. It came out ok I guess. My husband loved it though!
