Anybody done one of those pull-apart jobbies? I am curious about any helpful hints or tricks.

First of all, WELCOME!

Are you talking about the cupcake cakes? Here is some info on it: http://community.webshots.com/album/105830324epGFhn

They are fun and very easy to make!

I have made TONS of those.

First, "glue" the cupcakes (still in their liners) down on the board using a small dab of icing. Make sure the cupcakes are as close together as possible. Then I take either the easy icer tip or the cupcake tip (2D) and pipe icing to cover the cupcakes. Then smooth with spatula and decorate as you want. The great part is you're just icing the tops, you don't have to worry about the side!
