Can I Make A Basket Handle Out Of Fondant??
Decorating By SJerseyMommy Updated 13 Mar 2006 , 4:22am by PinkCakeBox
I am attempting to make an Easter Basket cake for Easter. I want to add a handle. Will fondant hold the shape?? I've attempted it out of royal and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I thought it would be easier to make it out of fondant.
Thanks
It can be done, but you'll probably need to think about using lollipop sticks in it for support!
I have done this a few times with fondant...
I just made two long snakes and wraped them around each other, kinda like a braide, but with only two rows instead of three. I then measure the arch against my pan, and let it dry. I just let mine air dry on some wax paper for a few days, turning it once a day or so.
When I go to put it on my cake I kinda, dig a hole into the cake with a knife so the handle glides in... I then cover it up a bit with grass or flowers etc...
Hope that makes sence....Hope it helps????
Instead of fondant, use gumpaste - or add CMC to fondant - it makes it dry really fast. Satin Ice gumpaste works really well too. Mold your handle around a pan, or whatever, dust the pan first w/a little cornstarch to prevent it from sticking. Wait 24 hours...and voila you'll have a perfect handle that doesn't need any additional support.
