I was watching the biography of Paula Deen on the Food Network. She was explaining how she got started and it was selling sandwiches out of her home. Her friend was saying how it was illegal since she was not licensed. I know we all do cakes and not sandwiches but it made me feel better to know that her success came from cooking in her kitchen unlicensed.

I went to a small cake show once and talked to a very successful bakery owner and popular Maryland cake decorator. She basically said that everyone starts out unlicensed in their homes and just does what they can when they can. And in Maryland, at least when she started, it was highly illegal to do anything like that! She just said keep a low profile, go word of mouth, and work your way up.

I planned to get licensed this year (legal in PA for nonperishable bakery items) but then I got unexpectedly pg and so I don't want to put out all the money and time for a license if I will not be able to really advertise and push my cakes.... "Sorry, I'm out of commission for two months!" So we'll see, take it a year at a time. Plus we are thinking about buying a home within a year or two and I'm not sure I want to go through all this and then have to do it all again that soon.

It means bakery items that do not have to be refrigerated (so cookies, cakes, breads, etc). I refrigerate mine for stability but it would just mean I would have to sell cakes that could be left out at room temp...so no perishable fillings. I'd probably end up buying the bakery fillings that don't have to be refrigerated.

I've got three boys too and I'd rather have all boys than all girls. I'd still like to have a girl though but you take what you get. I love my boys and I have a niece so it's all goodicon_smile.gif

I think all caterers/bakers start out in their kitchen; all mechanics start out in their backyard and all contractors start out in their garage.

Who just sits in their living room and decides out of the blue "Hey! I think I'll invest $100,000 into this business that I've never tried my hand at to see how it goes!" Oh yeah .... banks LUV giving loans to THOSE people! ...... NOT!!!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Congrats, Kitagrl! So many things to be excited about- new baby, new house, and eventually a new business- it will happen!

I've been dreaming of moving back to PA, my homestate and where all of my family still lives, and getting a house where I can sell cakes out of my own kitchen! I didn't reailze there was a "non-perishable" rule there, so that's good to know. Not that it's happening anytime soon...

Kitagirl,
I live in York, PA - what do I do to start to get my license? Or does it go by counties? Didn't know about the non perishable rule.
Congrats on the new baby. When are you due? How have you been feeling? You must be exhausted running after 3 boys!

Thanks for the info on Paula Deen's biography. I'll have to tape it next time it's on.

Congrats Kitagrl! The doctor told me that once you have two kids of the same sex, there is a 70% chance that the next baby will also be the same sex. And there is even a higher percentage the more you have of the same sex. Somehow I beat those odds though, LOL. I have two boys and my 3rd was a baby girl who turned 1 recently. I'm trying to savor every minute b/c I definitely don't want any more babies!

I have four boys. If I had a dollar for every time someone looked at me and said ................ "no girls?"................ icon_rolleyes.gif

One day, a new friend told me a story of a religion - and I don't remember which - where the leader or founder or something had three wives and was without sons, which was terrible in that culture. So God gave him a fruit and told him to cut it into four pieces, and feed the pieces to his wives. He did, gave each wife a piece of fruit, and the extra to the favored wife. Those wives each had a son, except the favored wife, who ate two pieces, and had two sons. So, in that religion, you are considered very blessed by God if you have four sons, because that is the revered family. I thought that was a nice story. I don't know the particulars of the story, maybe some of y'all do, remember, I got it second hand, but I just like the story, because it makes me feel special.

Awww that's sweet!

Yeah how about a dollar for everyone who says "Are you going to try again for a girl?"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! icon_lol.gif

That's ok, I was in ToysRus today getting birthday gifts for my soon to be 2 yo and the lady behind me in line said she had FIVE boys! Her little guy was wanting more matchbox cars and I said "Come on, you can never have too many cars!" She said "Well I have five boys and we could open our own matchbox car shop!" icon_cool.gif (The little boy successfully added two more packs to her order haha)

heh yeah...or how about the jokes about "My Three Sons" or "oh...a few more boys and you'll have a soccer team there"

I have to admit that I actually cried at the ultrasound when I found out I was having a 3rd boy. I was just sure that he'd be a girl because my pregnancy was different...nope. He was just bigger than the other two icon_rolleyes.gif

He's just as wonderful as the other two, of course, but I'd had my hopes up. I'm just happy he's healthy and all.

eh, who needs girls? icon_razz.gif

Geez, just yesterday, my grandma was telling me that we should try just one more time. Afterall, she had 4 kids (two girls, two boys) so 4 isn't too many!

I don't know. It might be nice to have another but I don't think I want to right now. I get stressed out enough as it is with three tornados.

My husband is from Mexico and last time I was down there, my mother in law was telling me about the crazy old lady up the street...she had 30! boys. That's not a typo. 30! They start out young there and she must have had one every year or something...no wonder she was a "crazy old lady" It's not unheard of for someone to have 15 kids or so down there, one every couple years and they have a name for women who have kids every year, anera (with ~ over the n). It's not that common with women breastfeeding but there are some who can still get pregnant w/breastfeeding.

I think I'd run out of names icon_lol.gif

I actually decided I am better off without girls. Think of this.... if in public, I get to send the boys with Daddy to go to the potty. When they get older, I can send them ALL fishing or camping and I get the house to myself. No weddings to pay for.... no makeup to buy.... no perms or formal dresses.... no fighting over the latest mini skirts or low cut tops... just four boys to send out to the soccer field or the basketball court or somewhere else.

Yeah, I'm getting used to it for sure! Just gotta make it through these wild years when they climb the walls....

Believe me, four is a lot of kids!

I have a friend who has ten.......... yeesh, I can't imagine!

My fourth child was a Christmas baby...... and I had always dreamed of a Christmas daughter to name Holly Noelle. When they did the ultrasound, I tried to make that thing be anything but what it was, I wanted a girl so bad! LOL But Tiny Tim is a Christmassy name......... we called him Tiny for years, til he got bigger than me!

Then for the fourth pregnancy, I tried to get my then-husband to discuss names, he wouldn't, kept saying the name was Laura Jane! I would say okay, but I pity him when he starts school! By then, I was just used to having boys!

But you're right, who needs girls...........

Kitagrl, get the hubby and kids into scouting! My twins and husband are all die-hard scouts, and I have many, many weekends all to myself! In truth, I always thought I'd have girls (being #3 of four girls, it's just what I was used to), but my boys are the most wonderful gifts God has given me.
P.S.- My Aunt and Uncle had seven boys, gave up, and adopted a girl.

haha, literally! My 4-year-old can get to anywhere in the house. We put some things "out of reach" and I mean way on top of the entertainment center or whatnot...just the other day, I actually caught him scaling the entertainment center to reach up top! The kid is like a little monkey. My mom says it serves me right since I used to be able to get on top of the refrigerator before I could even walk icon_rolleyes.gif

Good point about the makeup, dresses, fights about revealing clothes! Just have to make sure we do "the talk" about their dealing with those girls! Some of the 1st grade girls are scandalous already!

Hello everyone. I dream to have my own cake shop one day. I am having trouble finding funds for the cake shops. I don't know about the goverment grants if they are good or ripped off. I am deaf and I dream to have my own cake shop. I dream about that every single day. Its frustrated where you can't find no help anywhere.

I don't know that they offer grants for starting a business. However there might be organizations that will help you since you are deaf? There are ways to start out by renting a kitchen or working with a friend or other ways... I don't think I'll ever end up with my own shop. What after braces for four boys and college....LOL.

yeah, the girls at school chase the boys...and that's pretty normal. One girl would not leave Joey (my 1st grader) alone and would try to force kiss him. I saw it on recess...I was trying to let him take care of the problem himself but she was relentless. Finally, I told her to stop and that he obviously didn't like her to do that. I think that my noticing scared her enough to stop, at least with him. After school, I told Joey that if she is still doing that, he should talk to her about it when she's not trying to do it, tell her that it bothers him then if she still didn't stop, to tell the teacher.

oh, and what's up with the Bratz?? ew!
