I need help on this, and hoping someone can...my father was a dear and cut me real nice boards that I can cover and use to put my cakes on (saves me from buying the cardboard circles, etc)...the problem I am having is wrapping the foil on them...looks good from the top, but the underside is horrible...I have used clear packaging tape, duct tape, etc. to hold it down. I don't want to spend $7 dollar for a roll of the fancy foil that professionals use, but not sure how else to do it. Any suggestions??? icon_sad.gif

Hey, I see you are in VA too!! I just looked at your cake pictures...and they look great! I don't think I'd worry about the bottom of the cake boards, no one sees them anyway! Even when the boards are covered with the fancy foil, the bottom doesn't look to great!

Another idea for covering your boards, if you don't want shiny tin foil is the use freezer paper, the glossy coated side would face up, and since it's white, it will coordinate with everything. To me it smooths out better so you don't get those "wrinkles" like can occur with foil and just gives the cake board a cleaner look....and as someone else said, doesn't matter what you wrap it with, the underside isn't going to look wonderful. icon_smile.gif

Are you having an issue with the covering not sticking to the underside?

I don't worry about covering the bottom of cake boards either. If you wanted to though, I bet you could cover them in contact paper.

No, packaging tape seems to work the best for sticking, but last night I didn't have any or scotch tape (which doesn't stick very well), and the foil kind of keeps falling down, etc...if that makes sense. I just think it looks bad, and was wandering if anyone had any secrets.
Thanks for any advice.

Has anyone used contact paper? I use that, if I can't find the grease resistant boards. I don't know how food safe it is, but I wash it off before I put the cake on it. Anyone else use it?

I do! I do!
I like to use it now because I put different types of gift wrap and the like on the board and then cover that with clear contact paper- and the board looks great.
In fact, last night I covered 2- oops I mean 3 small boards with floral print gift wrapping and then covered in clear contact paper. These were 6 " cakes to donate to a bake sale, so I wanted cheap but pretty since it was for a fundraiser that helps out single moms. I then iced the cakes with white icing and then colored some icing a deep purple color (to match the purple flowers on the gift wrap) and then did cornelli lace on 2 of the cakes and a squiggly design on the third cake. I took some pics and will post them later.
Another cake that I have posted but you can't see the board too well is the 'expect great things' cake. I printed out the kohls logo kinda small, cut a bunch of them out and then taped them to the cake board and then covered that with clear contact paper. So the board said kohls all the way around the board.
I found the clear contact paper tip on this site and I love it !!!!!

The boards need to be painted with a primer coat. I had this same problem. I was stapling the paper (I use wrapping paper and clear cello to cover my boards) until one day recently I was lining my cabinet shelves with shelfing paper and the instructions said that it would not adhere to raw wood, to paint a coat of primer on the shelves. I thought, hmmmm.... adhesive is adhesive, right? I painted the bottom of my wooden cake boards with 2 coats of primer and they've been sticking much better. I use masking tape or duct tape now.

I use contact paper also - only I use plain white. I can get it for $2 a roll and then you don't have to fuss with taping the bottom! I've also used freezer paper, but sometimes on a large board, you need more than one sheet and the frosting leaks into the paper at the cut and starts to bleed a greese spot. But it works in a pinch if you dont' want to spend that much $$ on wrapping!

$2 a roll sounds high to me.. hehehehe- I get that marked down last season stuff and stock up. Last Christmas I got a ton of foil (red, green, and gold) for about 75 cents a roll. On occasion I buy "new" paper. I also get many varieties from Big Lots and the Dollar Stores for almost nothing also.

The clear cello is a little higher.

I was at walmart this weekend and almost bought this really pretty roll on contact paper that was an ivory color with a light green marbling color. It was just gorgeous! But I was a good girl and did not buy it. (But it was sooo hard to be a good girl...)

Hey there. Love the contact paper idea! I am going to have to give it a try. Right now what I do is cover the board (wood) with freezer paper (shiny side towards the board) tape it with packing tape then I put the fancy foil on top of that. Both seems are on the bottom. So far I have had no problems with the tape sticking. Hope this helps! icon_biggrin.gif
